    Re: Hello from NH Seacoast

Dover's property taxes SUCK, but the houses are so much cheaper than Portsmouth. Had an offer on a place in Newington a month or two ago - where the taxes are so low they're almost non existent, but we got outbid Kinda glad, I like the Dover house we bought better anyway. My wife works in Dover, so this is going to save a bunch of gas. I grew up in Rochester - Dover has certainly come a long way since the 80's (well, as has most of the seacoast area).

I grew up in Madbury, later Durham. Wanna talk about property taxes?!

We were looking at the Hampton/North Hampton area, something west of Rt 1. But everything we found that we could afford was a dump. Then the place we wound up buying showed up and was way too much house for the money to walk away from.

    So yeah.

    We need a Golick's meetup.

Rochester...Manchester? I don't see how anyone from Manchcago would be remotely concerned about anything from Roachland...

I'm still just renting, but this is exactly why I'm in Dover also. I've been in Dover for about 7 months now and I'm actually moving to a bigger place right down the road near downtown in a couple weeks. I really like this town, still hate winter though!

It was college - lots of Manchester people went to Plymouth State - some of whom became good friends to this day. I think they just wanted to have a town that was more of a shithole than theirs and Rochester was an easy target. I've taken the bike through there and don't even remember the streets. It's like a foggy dream....(nightmare?)

Exactly. The same money that buys you an old house that has never been updated in Portsmouth and needs tens of thousands in work, buys you something that is fully updated in Dover, or even new construction. Although I hope prices continue to rise here so my condo will hopefully be worth a lot more 10 years from now. It's a bit of a dump itself, but I've recently put a little money into it to dress it up a bit for renting. Portsmouth is able to command pretty good rent prices. Helps that it's a 10 min walk from downtown. That was really convenient back in the boozing days.

Ahhh...I gotchya. Manchinatti has actually come a long way and has really worked at attracting a younger, hipper, more professional crowd. Rochester...well, it's still Rochester...

Yeah - lots of towns have come a long way - Manch Angeles got a lot better when they rennovated the mills on the river. Rochester is like in a time warp. Actually, it may have become worse after Cabletron left. The neighborhood I grew up in from 80-91 was new, and decent for the time. I've ridden through it since and it just looks run down. The essence of the town seeped in I guess.

And hey no offense to anyone here that lives in Rochester but, I mean, you know it sucks too.

    Re: Hello from NH Seacoast

Doesn't Portsmouth subsidize mortgages for people?

A friend was renting a duplex in Portsmouth for a while. Her landlord had a bunch of her mail mailed to my friends address so that she could claim she was living there and get the subsidy. Or some crooked foolishness like that.

In reality our budget was dump level. We were looking for a fixer, just not psyched about a small fixer. Our budget didn't go far in Dover either.

I had actually signed on new-construction off of Central Ave near Hannafords at one point. 3 br 1.5 bath on a half acre and our budget was blown. For better or worse that deal fell through.

    Re: Hello from NH Seacoast

Real estate's a funny game. Pain in the ass one at that.
Portsmouth does have some subsidy stuff. I bought by condo in 2007 through their Hometown program for first-time homebuyers. It lets you qualify for up to $50k in a "shadow" loan that is 0% interest and you don't make payments on it until 10 years have gone by. But if yo move out, the entire amount is due immediately. IF they know you moved. That might be what that landlord did you were talking about. It's basically a way to make your primary mortgage a lower amount so in turn, your payments are lower.

I'm too honest. I just refied my condo and rolled in my shadow loan - I only qualified for $15k so it wasn't that big a deal. Plus I don't have an extra $15k sitting around to give the city of portsmouth. I'm sure I could have gotten away with it but oh well.

I've got news for ya: that 'shadow' loan is going to be secured by a mortgage, and will show up in any title search, such as when you go to sell. TNSTAAFL.

Welcome! Awesome intro. The new bike looks great. In the next few years I would like to get something like that. It will probably be a multi though.

Welcome to NESR! I'm a huge fan of the 1A ride (posted a few pics from last summer on here). Also love the NH seacoast in general.

This thread inspired me to try Newicks for lunch today (was surprised I hadn't even heard of it before). It reminds me of a seafood version of Hilltop Steakhouse: not as bad as people say, but not what it was back in the day. Tried the crab cakes, some raw oysters and a Tuckermans pale ale. Overall, it wasn't amazing (especially for the area), but not bad.

Anyways, welcome to the forum and maybe we can organize some seacoast rides this spring/summer!

Not sure why photo is upside down. Can't figure out how to edit it from my phone. F-it. Tilt your head or use your imagination.

    Re: Hello from NH Seacoast

    That beer is fucking magical.

Newick's used to be humungous servings for reasonable $$$. It was the go-to place for my family when I was growing up whenever my father got a promotion at work or something went right in the world for us. At some point the servings seemed to get smaller, the service worse, and the prices higher. Now it's just what it is.

I still love the baked stuffed shrimp though.

    Hungry now.

Welcome, and keep an eye out for a few Neglected rides that you'll see showing up in the Rides & Events forum. We're planning at least one SNH to the Maine coast & back trip this year that may be posted up as a larger group ride. Most other larger group rides will be north and west (or both) of Manchester.
