    Talking Hello - non-rider newbie :-)

    Hi there,

I'm new to the motorcycle scene. I have my license but highly doubt I can drive thus I'm considering hosting a memorial for my 2001 Suzuki GSX600 Katana before I actually kill it :-)

I have no gear but figured I would sign up and see if any of the gals here had any insight as to where to start...I'm 5'3" ~120lbs...

    Let the fun begin!

    Did you take the MSF?

No gear, so you don't have a helmet?

Yes, I took the MSF...I hope you don't think I'm safe to go on the roads just after it...I would be a menace to the road :-)

    Re: Hello - non-rider newbie :-)

Welcome Clearrider. Glad to see your at least thinking about getting gear.
For starters, there's the helmet, fullface DOT/Snell M2005 approved, (though they do have the new M2010 approvals). Full-face helmets give you the best protection in a crash, and the snell approval rating is good too.
Jacket and pants, your going to want to get stuff with "C.E." armor in the back, shoulders, elbows, knees, and hips. Leather, double stitched, with 1.2-1.4mm thickness is best. Yes you should get pants, most levi's rash through surprisingly quick in a crash.
Getting some proper boots wouldn't be a bad idea either, they'll give you much more protection than a pair of Timberlands.
For gloves, I would get leather-palmed, full gauntlet (over the cuff) gloves with hard knuckle protectors.
What's your budget for gear? I would recommend you allocate at the very least $500 towards buying gear, more if you can. You won't regret it when you meet the pavement.
    Best of luck!
    Rossco

Hey, do a little shopping.. you can find a lot of decent gear online for cheap, and some local stores too!

    I managed to get:
a textile jacket new from a local store for $130
    boots online for $75
Kevlar lined jeans for $45 (although I'm on the search for ce padded pants)
gloves at our local Duncanmoto for $40
full faced helmet DOT and Snell approved online for $60 (closeout deal again)

And.. my first bike was a GSXF600 too!

    Welcome.

Don't take anyone's word on gear til you try stuff on and actually find out what fits you. What fits my legs at 5'6" may not be the same for yours at 5'3"....visit your local shop and ask them, they have expertise and usually a willingness to get people set up in good safety gear.

And get your gear before you toss a leg over. If you're already planning on killing your bike, don't plan on killing yourself in the process.

    Re: Hello - non-rider newbie :-)

Welcome to the forum! I would highly recommend that you at the very least by a helmet, a jacket, and gloves. Really you should buy all the gear, but if you are on a limited budget then start with those three. You can go into the local dealerships and support them with your business, or you can go in and try on gear. once you find a few brands and sizes that fit and you like, hop online and see what is out there for used gear. Often times you can find the gear that you want for cheaper because it's partially used. Anywho, hope you have fun riding.

P.S. I would highly recommend the MSF (motorcycle safety course). go to your local DMV and check out what is offered. The course will not only teach how to safely ride a bike, but it will also likely lower your motorcycle insurance .

    Re: Hello - non-rider newbie :-)

    So, I bought:

    - gloves: Scorpion ExoWear Cool Hand Black Small Women's
    - boots: "Monza" waterproof motorcycle boots
    - jacket: Joe Rocket Suzuki Women's Medium
    - helmet: HCI-89 Modular Full Face Helmet (Black)

Thanks Rossco for the definitions (and Rice_Rocket for the online suggestion) - it was much easier to purchase the jacket and helmet. Mzdagrl you were right on the measurements. I guess my arms and legs are "longer" than most women my height.

Sportygurl, I'm definitely following your advice and not riding solo which means I'll soon have to follow OreoGaborio's advice and reach out to some of the people who live in the North Shore.

I'm "almost" there...need pants, register/insure the bike and find a victim to ride with me :-)

You are all great - thanks for the advice!
