Hi from a female rider in Western MA!

Just wanted to say hi to everyone. I just joined today on a recommendation from a poster at SVrider.com. I am in the process of getting my lisence and first bike. I must say I am rather excited. I have signed up to take the MSF course in August and cannot wait!

Any tips, suggestions, rules, etc are welcomed and even messages to just say hi! Once I'm up and running, I'll be itching to go on some rides. Like I said I just wanted to say HEY!

Hi from a female rider in Western MA!

    Welcome.

Best advice is just take it easy. Youre giving yourself a good start by taking that class. Also think about investing in some good gear.

Hi from a female rider in Western MA!

I have the gear. Next step is the class and looking into purchasing a beginner bike. Any suggestions? I have a great friend helping me in this process but from what I have been reading it is best to start at a 250cc instead of a 600cc.

Hi from a female rider in Western MA!

Not to mention the 250's can be had very cheaply, even in good shape with low miles. Even being in just Hadley, you've got some great roads to ride, and can fairly easily avoid traffic, as thats gonna be the last thing you want on your mind while trying to get the hang of things.

I'm assuming your doing the MSF down in Westfield?

Also, just remember theres no need to rush things, you are pretty much in the exact position I was in last year. About June I seriously started looking for a bike, and had one bought by the middle of July. I had then signed up for the MSF class in Westfield, during the 2nd weekend of August. I had my bike a month before the MSF, but I took the time to buy some gear (you're already all set there), and took my bike out only in the parking lot of the storage area I had the bike at, and just putted around in first gear, getting a feel for the controls, and finding my balance at low speeds. I didnt get on the road until after I was fully licensed (for the most part ), and glad I waited, the MSF is invaluable to a new rider.

You can at least go get your permit in the meantime, the test is a cakewalk.

Hi from a female rider in Western MA!

Yeah, I signed in up in Westfield, but I'm not going until August b/c of my crazy work schedule, and of course the class fills up FAST!

250 is a good bike to start on if you have never ridden anything in the past. And they can be purchased pretty cheap used. There is one right down the street from me for 1200 but I think it will go for 1000. Didnt get much info on it since no one answered the door.

If you have a history of riding you can problably start on a 600 just need to respect the power.

Think about how you want to ride and that will help you decide what is best for you.

Yup. Ninja 250 is a great first bike, as well as the Ninja 500 or Suzuki GS500. Reliable, light, a lot of fun to ride, and enough power to get you to 100mph+. 600 sportbikes are a completely different story, stay away from getting one for your first.

Hi from a female rider in Western MA!

Another +1 tot he Ninja 250 (or 500). I had a 250 as my first bike and moved right up to the SV a few months later. It was a great bike to start with. Welcome to the forum, and try not to get too scared.

Sure they do. Go riding all day. Come back around 7/8/9PM. Start drinking heavily. Pass out on random other NESRian's lawn around 2AM. Wake up hungover. Eat breakfast. Ride home.
