Tappan Zee is the way to go. Take the MA Pike to 84, 84 all the way across the bridge (stop in Nanuet for some White Castle), then take the GSP all the way down to the Jersey Pike.

As far as D.C./Baltimore, I don't remember traffic being terrible on 95, but safe bet is to always take the B-more Beltway. You'll wanna go down across the FS Key bridge to hook back up with 95. Otherwise you'll being taking 695 all the way around the wrong direction. At D.C., I don't think it matters if you take the Beltway 495W or 95S, they're both about the same distance. Basically, just google map it and pick one.

    Richie,

I've done this drive a few times. If you are doing the ride in a one shot deal straight through then my recommendation is to leave at between 6 and 7 PM from the Boston area, doing this will get you through Richmond VA before the morning rush hour traffic (approx. 10 hours in). Once you are past Richmond VA you rarely hit any major cities so the traffic wont be too bad.

As far as routes go I usually go Rt90 to Rt84 to Rt684 to Rt287 over the Tappan Zee (dodging the George Washington Bridge) Depending on if you are towing or not, if not towing you can then hop onto the Garden State Parkway south, think it is exit #14 up the hill after the Tappan Zee, until it hits the New Jersey Turnpike, if towing then I would take Rt 9W, just after Tappan Zee, along the Hudson all the way down to where you find the signs for the New Jersey Turnpike, pretty close to the GW Bridge, and get on the New Jersey Turnpike there. Follow the NJTP all the way to Delaware and then follow 95S forever until you hit Florida. Depending on where in Florida you are going will determine where you go from there.

If you are doing this starting at dinner time then 95S wont be an issue getting through places like Baltimore and Washington D.C. if you are going any other time there may be quicker routes going around the cities on roads like 695 around Baltimore and 295 or 395 around D.C. (not 100% sure on the route numbers just trying to give examples)

There will probably be a few posts saying there are shorter ways and various other reasons to go other ways, this is just the easiest way I have found to make the trip. Would probably be a great idea to grab one of those books of maps, they sell at Barnes and Nobles etc., that has maps of all the states to have with you on the ride.

Good Luck on the trip South regardless of how you get there.

    Joel

Well, looks like Im leaving early tomorrow AM, so allow me to get sappy for a minute.
I never knew how hard it would be to say goodbye to some of you guys. Honestly these past few years have been some of the greatest most fun of my life. Between race weekends, Newbury poses, drunkathons and all the other shit, man, what a blast.
Anyway, hopefully Ill be back sooner rather than later and we can keep up the shenanigans.

From someone who drove 3250 miles in 2.5 days, Don't leave Sunday, leave Saturday night. If you leave in the evening, the driving is much easier on your eyes, there's no traffic and you'll completely beat NYC and Washington mess.
