Make sure that when you buy your 1k you write your will. Then write a list where you want your family to donate all of your stuff. Also, make sure you carry your blood type somewhere on you and an ICE #. Make sure you have health insurance that cover skin graffs.

Was planning on writing my will if i get a bike in general. never thought about writing my blood type but that is a good idea.

Seriously man. Ive been riding for 10 years...i was 15 when I first started. I bought my 1k this summer and never used all the power..actually, I did on the highways....which was stupid. Stick to a 600 or 750 at most.....Learn first bro, then go balls to the wall with whatever you like when your more experienced. Im sure you have loved ones that would appreciate that decision.

2nd that, trust me, rode my friends 600 (what i used to ride occasionally, and 2nd bike i have ridden) accidentally wheelie. no joke, opened up the throttle, hit the power band, and piss myself. good times though, 600 is plenty

Been there done that. Rode my brothers dirty bike when I was 16 and opened the throttle (by accident) and that shit took off like a bat outta hell. Hit a snow plow and launched 15' in the air and head first into a tree. A week later I woke up. 600 is plenty

So why would you be looking at a 1000?

Good luck with your search, remember to factor in a Jacket, gloves, boots and a Helmet.

The expression I like to use when people ask what they should start on is "It's your FIRST bike, not your last".... it's wise to buy a cheap piece of shit to learn the basics on. The majority of new riders drop their first bike at least once, if not a few times. There's no sense in buying your dream bike right off the bat just to be a nervous bitch every time you throw a leg over it. Get something you don't mind scratching up and once you learn the fundamentals of riding you can get something nicer.

As for engine size, people say smaller is better... I started on a 600 and although I don't wanna be a hypocrite, I will be... because it almost got me into serious trouble more than once. It's very tempting to hold the throttle wide open and see how fast it'll go. A smaller bike, while it'll get you into just as much shit as a bigger bike, at least it'll give you more time to think "wtf am I doing?" and roll off the throttle before you get to ludicrous speed.

Bottom line: you can learn how to ride on any bike, but a smaller, cheaper, lightweight bike is the smarter choice.

My first bike was a GS450s. Go with an inexpensive (but sound) smaller bike, high quality gear, and a riding course.

THEN you can go too fast, fall down, hit a tree, and wake up six weeks later!

    Go fast. Have fun. Repeat.
