New guy from VT. Just getting back into "dirt" with a BIG RED PIG XR650l, after a 12 year leave on street. Totally stoked not being worried about my bike anymore. No more washing, being able to jump sidewalks in B-town, and going where-ever I want to travel. My buddy told me about this site, and seems like a good bunch of people. Just want to get out and ride. Thanks

Welcome. I'm also (fairly) new to VT. I'm starting to find some dualsport riders from the Burlington area. Keep in touch and maybe we can set up some group rides.

    D'oh!

Mountainman, be careful when the time comes for a valve check, if you do the work yourself (which you should, as it's easy). I picked up my XR used and the previous owner's mechanic must have used air tools on it -- first time I did an oil change, one of the filter cover bolt heads popped off with virtually no torque.

Well, I did the first valve check on Saturday, this time one of the valve inspection covers came flying off as I was trying to tighten it down. Once again, I wasn't torquing on it very hard; must have been cracked already. The cover separated from the threads about 3/4 of the way around. So now the bike is laid up as I wait for a new cover to arrive. Of course this happens the day before I had a dual sport ride planned. Pain in the ass.

So yeah, when tightening your valve inspection covers, be careful. They're made of shitty aluminum pot metal.

loan me $4k and I'm there
I did however send that to a friend, he wants an XR650. If I could afford one, I'd most likely do something completely stupid like reg an RMZ450, get a light kit and then try to reg it.

course I was told that bike needs a rebuild every 10 hours. I saw one though on RT17. Had the motard kit from motostrano, lights, etc.
I'd probably get into trouble on something like that, wheelies all over, sidewalks, intentionally off the road into the ditch and back on, etc
    heh heh

Just got back into town. Thanks for the welcomes. I am located in West Bolton. Newbob, you might have an idea.
Mark, all that flockin' work did you have to adjust the valves.
My tires are kinda spent but if anybody wants to rip it up this sat or sun i'm in.

No, valves were in spec. So I disassembled the bike and snapped off the cover for nothing.

Well, not really. While I had it apart I adjusted a few other things as well and installed a crankcase breather filter instead of having the hose connect back into the airbox. Should run a little smoother that way.

I might be up for a casual dual-sport ride on Sunday -- nothing too nuts because I'm still pretty new to this dirt thing, but I know a nice unmaintained dirt road in Underhill, and I've been meaning to check out the Lincoln Gap which is half dirt...

I'd be in for Sat afternoon, we could do Lincoln Gap and few hundred other dirty roads out that way.

I can't do Saturday, already have a street ride planned with my Triumph RAT pack. I'd be in for Sunday though.
