Smile new to the site- new to bikes in general

just want to say hi. I'm new to the whole bike scene. Just got my first bike- unfortunately it's not running right- keeps stalling on me. So once it gets fixed I'll be out there.

So what exactly was the problem? You said it dies after starting? How long does the bike run before dying? Does it run better or worse with the choke engaged? Does the bike start up then die before you get on it and ride, or after you've been riding down the road for a while? Once it dies, will it start again immediately, or do you have to wait a few minutes?

There's some smart folks around here. If you can answer those questions, chances are one of them will have a few places you can start looking. Might even get the bike running before the floodwaters recede

well- its starts. then as soon as the rpm's drop . the engine dies.
This morning the fuel line was disconnected for some reason and I had to put that back on. It does the same whether the choke is on full or not. Can't even get it started long enough to even ride it up and down the street

Hmm...did you own the bike last year as well? If so, what did you do to winterize the bike? If nothing, and the bike hasn't run right at all this year, you could have bad gas. Also possible the gas in your float bowls evaporated over the winter and varnished your carburetors, clogging the jets. Another thing that could go wrong in the winter is that mice got in your airbox and made a nest, and now your bike is starving for air.

One thing you can do is start your bike up, then when it dies take off the fuel tank and pull your spark plugs. If they're wet and smell like gas, your bike is probably not getting enough air and is flooding. If not, good chance it's not getting enough fuel. While you've got the plugs out, that's a good time to check the spark plug gap and make sure you're getting good spark in both plugs.

If you don't have any luck there, I'd check your airbox then take the carbs off and rebuild them. It's real easy on the EX, the carbs come off in about 15 minutes...I rebuilt mine last year after owning the bike for a month. The service manual helps here, but you can fudge your way through if you're somewhat mechanically inclined. Let me know if you've got any questions. I've got the same bike (an 87) and went through similar problems with it last year. I'm no bike expert, but I play one sometimes on TV

If you ask your questions over at the maintenance forum (off the general bike forum), you'll find some real smart people over there. TLRMan, Stoinkythepig, and Rye are all great guys, if they can't help you find your problem, it probably can't be found...

thanks again for replying. I did not own the bike last year.
I will try all those things this afternoon- seems easy enough to do. I'm pretty good with stuff like that. I ordered a manual last night so I should have that by the end of the week.
