New member from the South Shore

Hi guys, I'm new here and new to riding - in fact I only got my permit today. My previous experience on two wheels has been limited to commuting on bikes and a stint with a moped. I'm looking forward to picking up my first bike soon (and then maybe dropping it, from what I hear New member from the South Shore ). I have already learned a bunch on here and hope to learn more

A cheap, reliable one. More specifically, an sv650 seems just about perfect for what I want - not too expensive, fuel injected, enough power to feel comfortable on the highway occasionally and a comfortable riding position. I'm also open to similar bikes - there was a suzuki bandit on craigslist for $500 that I would have gotten but I wasnt fast enough. Heck, I've even thought about getting a ninja or cbr 250/500

Mostly I just want something cheap enough that I can learn without worrying too much while figuring out what I actually want from a bike.

Welcome! You’ll find great deals in the winter if you’re willing to wait. See gen1 SV650s go for <$1k now and then, gen2s for not a lot more. I have a 2000 ZR7 you could have for pretty cheap if you want something rn, but have some parts on order for it.

Started riding an 05 SV650 this year and it’s a great bike. Found myself riding it almost more than the GSXR 750, plenty of power to have fun and not quite enough to get in serious trouble!

I'm willing to wait - I've been thinking about doing this for a long time, no rush now. I'm somewhat interested in your bike if you want to pm details, haven't heard much about that model.

If you're in no rush the SV is a solid choice. The ZR7 is cool, but heavy and not much more power than an SV with much less parts availability. Just got it off a friend to help him out and figured I'd do the maintenance and trade it or sell it cheap. Good power for <$1k bike.

Enjoy the show. The sv is a fun platform for all kinds of things.
    Good luck.

    I have a 92 GS500 that I would let go for $700.

I'm in New Hampshire right now but if you're interested can get some pics when I get back.

Sure, I'd like to take a look at some pictures. Hows it compare to a similarly old ninja 500? I've seen some of the old reviews that say the ninja has more power - does the suzuki have any advantages?

    It’s a Suzuki! Clear advantage.

My first street bike was a 2005 GS500F. Loved it. Not the fastest bike, but it felt pretty fast at the time, prob a little down on power from the Ninja 500. Easy to maintain and fun to ride.

If the suzukis are more reliable/easier to maintain, I'd take that over power any day. Most of my riding will be a 2 mile commute on back roads to the train station, max speed of 40

Re: New member from the South Shore

I'm just keen on Suzuki, but the GS is pretty straightforward to maintain and faithful as they come for the most part. The Ninja's are pretty well time-tested too though, prob more a matter of preference than anything. My buddy has had his late-80's Ninja 250 for years, barely takes care of it, and it just keeps running.

That sounds like exactly what I want. You sold me on an old cheap ninja 500. Haha
