No, I'm of the right generation. I remember seeing Star Wars in the big theater when it came out; I was 14 at the time. It's the quality of the humor. The jokes in Spaceballs I found to nearly all be too obvious and of low wit, and too much potty/body function/lowbrow stuff. Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein were smart and witty films.

Except that the quotes aren't funny. Blazing Saddles had funny quotes. Young Frankenstein had funny quotes. Holy Grail and Life of Brian and Buckaroo Banzai have funny quotes. Fuck, even the damn RHPS has funnier quotes than Spaceballs.

again, its a difference of generations. the 80s had films like airplane, fast times, and NL vacation. that type of humor became popular then. not to mention it was a direct spoof of the popular star wars movies that came out at that time. maybe Mel threw it together too fast to make it great but it will still always be one of his greatest movies.
blazing saddles and young frank werent that funny to me because they mocked things that were before my time. my dad loves blazing saddles because he grew up watching westerns so he sees all the inside jokes that i dont get.
i get the star wars reference jokes in spaceballs that arent so obvious.

im not a gene wilder fan really. i really like him in WW&tCF but thats probably my fondest memory of him. im not a Rick Moranis fan either but he was good in spaceballs. TBH, mel brooks movies arent generally on my watch list with the exception of spaceballs. maybe robin hood as well.

Welcome Hooli. I am also a refugee from CA; moved to NH from San Diego 4 years ago.
The two things I miss about CA are lanesplitting and Mexican food. Other than that, I'm entirely happy I moved.
