    Signing in

    Hi there,

I pretty much like anything with a motor in it, which I suppose makes me a glutton for punishment. My current ride is a 1982 Honda Silverwing 500. I actually bought it for/with one of my daughters but she decided it was too big for her.

It developed a rap in the engine after the first season which, based on everything I had read sounded like a common problem for this bike (broken timing chain tensioner). I bit the bullet and pulled the engine and removed the rear cover, only to find out that's not the problem. Oh well. Back to the drawing board.

    Re: Signing in

Yep. Sounds more like a rap. I was thinking maybe a wrist pin, but it's hard to tell exactly where the sound is even coming from. I have a friend that's supposedly good with bikes and he offered to check it out once I get it back together.

If it was the tensioner, like it really sounded like it was, when it goes it allows the timing chain to shave metal off castings that it runs very close to (due to the slop from having little to no tension). At least I know it's not that, which would have trashed the engine in fairly short order.

I uploaded some pics in the member gallery, not to be confused with the pic by Naked Daytrader Now that I look at them it kind'a reminds me of the scarecrow scene with the flying monkeys from the Wizard of Oz, as in -

They took off my tank and put it over there, then they ripped off my fairing and threw it over there, and... well, I'm sure you get the idea.

As soon as I get the replacement gasket for the rear cover I can put it back together, so that I can take it apart again when I find out what the REAL problem is.
