First time Rider with a Kawasaki Ninja 250R (Plymouth, MA)

    Hey guys,
Name's Jonathan (20 y/o). Just started riding recently for the first in my life and I'm absolutely loving it. Bought a new Kawasaki Ninja 250R, not that long ago.
I was talking to my uncle (a long time rider), and he suggested I join NESR to meet some poeple in my area to ride with. I'm the first of my friends to ride, so I've been going it alone.
Anyone in the area wana chat and maybe meet up and ride sometime? I have no idea where the best places to ride are since I'm so new to it. ^_^
    -Thanks

Yo dude...I grew up in plymouth, still work there. I don't do too much street riding, but I can point you in the direction of some good roads, technique, and help ya along.

Nice choice for a first bike. I loved my Ninja 250, its so light and flickable and the power is perfect for street riding.

Welcome to NESR. There are some nice roads through MS forest. But, also a lot of pedestrian activity in the summer. I love to head out there in the late fall / early spring. Make sure you get some nice gear!

Welcome! Have you ever had Charlie's cupcakes in Plymouth? It's my favorite cupcake place so far and I've been to a lot! I'd go on rides with you but I don't have a street bike.

I think I'll try riding through Miles Standish today while the weathers good. Thanks for the suggestions guys!
    I don't think I've ever been to Charlie's cupcakes. Can't say I'm much of a cupcake guy. ^_^
Much as I love my bike, I'll probably sell it and upgrade to a bigger one in the spring. Not being able to go >70mph on the highway kinda sucks.

Not for nothing, but you will slowly learn that you do not really want to go faster than 70 on the highway. A reason for a larger bike would be for lower rpms on longer trips and more stability. Be safe man. I was in your shoes not that long ago and know the choices you are making and how you are thinking.

Re: First time Rider with a Kawasaki Ninja 250R (Plymouth, MA)

Not being to get out of your own way on the freeway is a tight feeling. But preteen is right, you are far away from exceeding that thing's capabilities as a twisty shredder.
Take your time, surf around here a bunch, talk to some experienced motorcyclists, and save the squidly highway wheelies for the squids.
(my current street bike is equally powerless, but handles like a real bike...that's the trade off)

Re: First time Rider with a Kawasaki Ninja 250R (Plymouth, MA)

I really do appriciate the concern, but I'm proud to be a little more cautious than most of my generation. ^_^
I've had a class D license for years and never been in a single accident or collision, or even been pulled over.
I won't be going >100 with no gear on, weaving in and out of traffic, like I've seen some guys doing. =/
Going 60 is great (70 only if you red-line it), untill you need to pass someone or speed up to merge with traffic, etc. I quickly found there wasnt much left in it.
Also, if I ever plan on taking passengers, a 250 probably won't be able to handle it on the highway.

Glad to hear you have your head on straight. Those are both good reasons for a larger bike. I would recommend sticking with the 250 for at least the end of the year though. And 70 only if you red line it? My 87 EX250 will go 96mph before it signs off.

Re: First time Rider with a Kawasaki Ninja 250R (Plymouth, MA)

I agree with csmutty, my bike can go up to 100mph. May take a while but it'll get there. I cruise on highway everyday with no problem of passing any cars. Normally I ride at 75 mph, and if I need to pass, I down shift to 5th gear. I did two up on highway too. Granted that both of us were small (260lbs total) , the bike handled fine.
Go to ninjette.org, it's a very friendly site for Ninja 250 owners.

Re: First time Rider with a Kawasaki Ninja 250R (Plymouth, MA)

60-65 in 6th gear, keeping it at 10,000rpm. 13,000 is when it starts red-lining.
I'm framiliar with downshifting to get up hills, but you can do that to pass?
Forgive my n00bishness. My total life expirience on a bike is the Training wheels course and then about 400miles on my own bike I bought just after. =/
I'm also by no means a gearhead. Hardly know anything about the workings of an engine. I never even drove a manual before getting a bike.
