    AK47

wondering who here knows about AK47s rather than sift thru nearly 200 pages in the gun thread, I decided to make a dedicated thread

It's so hard now days to do internet searches that don't come up with 99% garbage

Observation #1 AKs run anywhere from $500 to $2k+

cheaper ones are stamped, more expensive ones are machined, I understand the machined AKs are better, but how much better, I think you can find Polish machined AKs for $1000-$1100

Just build one from a shovel and call it a day.

Or talk to Loki, he's an AK guy among other things.

I do have a 10 or 12 gauge steel scoop shovel that has been needing a handle, that even if I put a handle on wouldn't ever use cause it's too fucking heavy

The cheap Romanian AKs have the furniture I like

Depends on what you want. They will all work, even the cheaper will rarely ever have an issue. That said, I ended up going for the better of the bunch and got a Chinese made one. But I also got mine way before the prices went through the roof, so if I was in the market now I would probably just go for a cheaper model.

    Re: AK47

I was the foreign weapons instructor for my Army unit. We differentiated between the original AK47 which had a machined receiver, and the AKM (Modernized) which was stamped. Our Cavalry troopers were trained to use the AK, light machine guns, and sniper rifles. We had an immense stock of captured 7.62x39 ammo and fired them until we were tired of it.

The AK’s site radius is fairly short, which makes sighting a little challenging. The one thing we learned was that just about any western ammunition is more accurate than just about any former Communist Bloc ammo. That might be out of date. I decided to focus more on M1 Carbines.

Century Arms International was building a US sourced AKM. Not sure how they shoot or are valued relative to the many sources of parts.

Boris’s shovel build is quite an amazing feat. He documented it on NES. 80% AR builds are more common because of the availability of parts and the utility of the finished product.

just get whatever AK fits your budget. Its an AK, drag it through the mud and it will pop off a round still anyway

I have the US-made Century Arms RAS47 centerfire, damn solid, can be had barebones used for $500 or under $1k new with some fun parts. Seems to be pretty common and lots of parts available. I'm no gun nut and don't know much about the platform but everyone who has fired it loves it.

I think the ghettofabulousness of the cheapo WASRs is exactly what is cool about them. Like Randy, I like the lowest end furniture...and stamped parts, etc; not on any other guns, really, just that one. There’s a place in a collection for fancy engraving and never-fired safe queens (I guess?), and a place for rough and tumble utility. WASRs are like rat rods with bullets

    Re: AK47

well, so far, what I'm hearing is better than I expected, not looking to put accessories on it, just a plain basic AK

not concerned about accuracy at distance, I got a bolt 30-06 for that, it would be my prepper gun and hardly get used, stockpile cheep ammo

Think Tekime has a good strategy with the CAI gun. BTW if you ever get a chance to tour there, they have the coolest warehouse ever. Like, you walk past an entire rack of PPSH41’s with drum magazines.

An SKS fires the same cartridge and is at least as inaccurate! There used to be surplus models for $175, undoubtedly double that or more now.

RAS is garbage sorry. Might be good for the 500 rounds but I wouldn't own one period.
Go to Atlantics website and have fun, Look at the Arsenal SLR 107 or I'll say get a Polish hell even a WASR over a RAS all day long

Yup. But, you will need to keep a bound book of all of your C&R purchases as well. I keep one for my C&R stuff and another for any others I have just so I have a record of them.

I just made a spreadsheet, and printed it out to keep in the safe. Even put pictures in it, not required.

I have a WASR 10/63 from Century that has never failed me. It's crude, not the most accurate, but it's been 100% reliable!

I'm not finding em that cheep, and mostly out of stock, I have found one place that just got a shipment of Serbian SKSs $429 individual, or $399ea crate price ($3990) complete with bayonet & grenade launcher

Obviously had they run Rotella we wouldn't be seeing these issues

Hasn't been my experience at all but good info. Any cheap mass-production rifle is going to have a forum thread somewhere, maybe there are much better options for the same price but I can't speak to it.

Talk about garbage, I actually prefer my illustriously shitty Kel-Tec SU16C. Thing has a terrible reputation and I've already had to file some damage to the bolt carrier after a pin separated during firing... but it's cheap, weighs almost nothing, portable, fierce and is fun as heck to shoot.
