I only used bear cannisters where they were provided at heavily used campsites. If tenting hang food high and far from trunks. In shelters, mouse hang, but there are some VERY gymnastic mice living in these shelters. Expect there to be a small mouse olympics each night. Pro tip: don't sleep with your head anywhere near the hanging food...

Just curious as state laws and transporting them can be a bit funky.

Thanks for all the advice. You folks are the best.

I ordered a stainless steel mesh bag that's supposed to be rodent proof. See: Amazon.com : GRUBPACK Rodent and Mouse RESISTANT Hiking FOOD BAG 20" by 18" weighs 9.5 oz. Strong and Durable Stainless Steel Mesh will keep your backpacking food SAFE! Worry-free Outdoor Food Protection! : Sports & Outdoors

I also got a pair of LOKSAK Opsack odor-proof bags.

I will put the food and other smelly stuff in the odor-proof bags, put them in the mesh sack, and hang them. Should work pretty well for bears and other

Got back last night. Only did 55 miles and 4 nights due to an injury in our group and bad weather. I trained really hard for this trip and it paid off nicely, I felt great and kicked ass compared to other 4 guys in my group. I don't think I'll ever plan a 7 day hike again, too many variables to screw with plans and carrying all that food sucks. Next time, I'll just do 1-3 nights.

That part of Virginia is gorgeous and the locals were really nice. Two of us decided to hitch hike 30 miles to get the car and we were picked up by the first driver we encountered who was going the OTHER way and happily took us the whole 30 miles. We bought the old guy a nice lunch and tried to give him gas money but he refused it.

Awesome! Yeah, it is tough to make miles with a group. 3-4 day stints between food stops in the way to go.

Here's a well-done video of the trip done by one of my hiking buddies. 5 Guys on the Appalachian Trail, Pearisburg to Daleville, Va - YouTube
