Wait until he gets what he knew was the problem replaced and the car still shakes. Then it will get interesting.

Randy, How many places did you call before you took it there? How do you know they didn't rip you off?

I didn't call anybody, just dropped it off and told em to do what it needs for inspection, the shop I used to go to told me 2 months ago it was going to need nearly $3k to pass inspection (inner and outer rocker panels both sides, rear bumper and 1 rear upper control arm) and that was before the muffler fell off and caliper started sticking

    parts alone were $150

Weird... One shop got your vehicle inspected for $280 when another said it'd be $3,000? Wow, good thing you didn't just stick with one shop..

they didn't say it would be $3k, rather told me what it would need, the $3k estimate is my own from experience, I knew that I would be able to find a shop that wasn't so picky about things that are more cosmetic than safety

As many people gave you legitimate feedback as well as questioning your approach, the least you could do is post how you got it repaired and at what cost.

Here's something that pisses me off. Fucking beer flavored. I can't stand this crap: "you want a beer?" "Oh what kind?" You're a man your favorite beer = free. Your second favorite = cold.

On a scale of 1-10, how horrible is the price for just the alternator itself? And they replaced the serpentine belt... What other belt could I have been charged for?

On what kind of vehicle? For example, if it's a European car, you got a bargain.

Some cars have a single serpentine belt, but not all do. You may have a separate belt for the A/C compressor, for instance.

Exactly number9 google search of the belt part numbers shows that one is for Alternator and AC Compressor and the other is a standard serpentine belt most likely for water pump and other items. Probably listed on a sticker under the hood of the OP's car on either the radiator support or the bottom side of the hood too.

    Is labor billed separately?

Part costs depend on the car. High water mark is probably something like a BMW E39 M5, which is like $1k for an OEM alternator. Re-manufactured or aftermarket models are still going to be more than what you paid. A smaller alternator used in multiple models/generations of car in extremely high production quantities go for less. Part grade is also relevant when comparing prices. For example, I can buy a $10 rubber bushing or a $30 rubber bushing, but I've seen how quick the $10 bushing fails.

Re: Best auto repair in So NH/NE Ma?

This isn't really an issue of picking or staying with a shop..

My civic broke down and I brought it to a VIP which was within the limited tow range for AAA.

The car ended up needing a new alternator and two belts?

Before that, I had 100k and 5 new England winters with my civic and my belts never squealed. Now, they make noise excessively.

Whether I warm my car up for 20+ min or not.

Sometimes I can get it to stop by shutting the heat off, or putting it in park, or rarely by revving it, but sometimes nothing I do can make it stop.

Is this cheap belts? An install error? Or potentially tough pulleys of a 246k engine with new un-broken in belts?

When I lived in Maine, I had several experiences with VIP. All of them were bad experiences.

My wild-ass guess is that the tension is wrong. Either too much tension or too little; if your car uses an automatic tensioner (which it probably does), check to make sure it's actually tightened and isn't just flapping in the breeze.

Re: Best auto repair in So NH/NE Ma?

Belt tension, cheap belts or pulley alignment (since they replaced the alternator)... take your pick. One (or more) of those three is typically the main cause of squealing belts.

Who wants to replace the oil pan on my 2005 automatic Civic EX with a 1.7L engine? I'll pay you in friendship and beer. and help.

I've been getting my oil changes done at Valvoline drive thru, and the funny thing is they are the only ones who do oil changes, and the first few there were no problems and they would show me my air filter, and then at some point my air filter bolts "somehow" got rounded off to the point where they won't even open it, and now my oil plug is messed up. I'm not insinuating anything, as it's 13yo, a New England car, and has 253k, but....

Anyway, Sullivan Tire quoted me $800, said it's a lot of bitch labor moving other things to get to the pan, and that the pan itself is $500. I found one on rockauto.com for $138, but can't do it myself...
