    Re: BMW cars

Owning a BMW is not for the mechanically disinclined or on a low income, pretty much end of the story right there.

That being said, do a major service on one (replacing cooling system, gaskets just about everywhere, etc.) and they will drive like a brand new car, even well north of 200k miles.

I also stopped paying attention to BMW after the early 2000's, and prefer a car I can at least reasonably expect to work on myself without a supercomputer next to me.

Picked up my current 2001 e39 540 wagon, did the timing chain guides, VANOS rebuild and tossed in all new rubber gaskets, hoses, and cooling system stuff. My parts order alone was 87 pieces and just about $1500. Any good indy shop the total bill would have been north of $5k, or more than the car is worth.... but I learned a shit-ton, know stuff is done right, and she drives like butter now.

For shits and giggles, this is what an old school BMW can do at Club Motorsports. Not my best driving for sure, but oh well.

in that 10K range you can find a used Lexus es350/330 if they want the prestige of a nice car like the bmw. and they are fucking bulletproof; but a tad dull around the edges.

Thanks. I think they just want something non-Taurus. Their friends have BMWs so that was the inspiration I guess. I really need something I don't have to fuck with while not putting them in another birth control type vehicle. If it's something I may drive occasionally even better!

V6 accord with a stick. Nice compromise all around. Throw a couple parts at it and embarrass the BMW kids, yet still pretty bullet proof. The 2 doors at least have more going for them in the looks dept than a taurus.

For me I like that option, but maybe a bit much nut. Aren't they close to 300hp? My brother had one and I thought it went really good. I assume that car comes with a 4 as well?

Low to high 200s depending on year. They're not slow.

They did come in 4 cyl flavor though.

A base Impreza with a stick would be a great alternative too. Could ice race or rally those things. Teach them a little car control.

Learning actual car control on ice / snow / wet surface should be 110% mandatory, IMHO.

That's 6 +/- months of our driving conditions up here in ME, I could not agree more.

Did anyone mention Team O'Neil's school? I'm sure you can DIY but maybe something fun to do activity-wise.

Best way to learn this is on a small bike in the dirt / wet / snow. Cornerspin, FTW!

I think we should all learn to drive a fucking tank. Not because it helps your driving abilities but driving a tank would be cool...

OP, I know they don't have a favorable following but I would recommend looking at a SAAB. Safe cars, nice to drive, get a basic model and they don't have a ton of power, not as unreliable as most think. I've had several and were great cars.

    Re: BMW cars

This 1-owner, manual Forrester looks nice AND just had the timing belt service done.

Manual Outback XT (the turbo / faster one) wagon here too, also w/ TB done.

    Nice little Impreza Sport Manual

For manual and AWD, you're pretty much lookin Subaru if you want to avoid ze Germans...

If an option that isn't BMW / Audi might work, a good clean R32 is a pretty awesome ride, fairly reliable... etc.

    Dark horse...

the car that I took driver's ed in, was a tank by modern day car standards, '68 Dodge Coronet, 3 on tree, no frickin power steerin, no power brakes. I'm sure bias tires as well. Snowstorms didn't delay driving time

Cheap (poor man's Audi), but same German B.S. to worry about as the BMWs.

Like the Saabs, there's a lot of room on them since they are really soft wholesale.

    Re: BMW cars

I'd argue that most VW's are going to have a little less to worry about as they are generally a little more sparsely equipped. That said, there are certainly better years to consider. 2004-2005 were pretty decent IMO, whereas 02-03 cars generally had shoddier electrics. At least this is from my personal experience. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another VW from 2004-2005, but I'd want to see receipts for the timing belt / water pump for sure (if it's a 1.8T, that is).

On the Saab note, what about the 9-7x? Snobby badge, but really just a Chevy trailblazer, no? That's gotta be at least a little more reliable than a true Saab engine?

It's a Trailblazer with the key between the seats. Literally.
