Have an appointment Monday already. Was afraid to donate for years. Ever since I overcame that fear I donate every 3 months or so.

Great job man. I try to donate at least once a year.
It’s not often we hear about them running low nowadays so when I hear about it I try to share as much as possible.

As soon as I donate I schedule another donation on the Red Cross donor app. Usually do it during lunch break.

I work in the blood banking industry for the past 13 years now. Winter cold and storms often drive donations down. The Midwest especially has been running low due to storms, flu and cold. As O neg is the universal donor that blood is typically used initially in a trauma then the patients actual blood type is used once the patient is typed. Kudos to all of you that donate. It doesnt take long, basically painless and you get free cookies.

    Good on you all.

I was in the Army in Europe in the 80’s when the Mad Cow disease hit Britain. Red Cross excluded European vets since. Is that exclusion still in force?

A pint of blood in America sells to hospitals for $180 to $300.

It isn't free to get the blood from point a to point b and ensure its safe. They also have to pay the personnel to take the blood. I have no problem with them charging for it because of the costs associated with processing and transportation of the product.

Im not sure what it costs in other countries but you and I are in RI. We dont have Red Cross for blood. We have independent centers. Independent centers have been merging or affiliating with others to survive. That is true as RI is now part of New York.

While the main raw material is free there are many costs.
Recruiting staff to get the donors in the door.
Collections staff to draw the blood.
    Higher turnover in that job.
Fixed sites, vans, or busses to collect the blood. Blood bags or apheresis kits to collect the red blood cells or platelets or plasma.
A lab along with lab staff, equipment and reagents to test for disease. Or you send it out to another lab and pay them. Every time a disease comes out like Zika for instance a new test is added. Tests are not cheap.
A component lab to manufacture blood products. Blood production really is like manufacturing. The whole blood can be separated into red cells, plasma and platelets.
Then you have distribution. Moving the blood to the hospital or to another part of the country that might be in need.
And of course the overhead. FDA regulated computer systems to track from donation through disposition, admin staff, QA staff to make sure SOP are being followed, medical staff, etc.
From donor walking in to the shipment of a unit out a lot of cost goes into the red blood cell product.
Ok off my soap box but blood isnt free and centers are not getting bottom lines off of those bags of red blood cells. They need to continue cutting costs, finding other revenue streams such as research, or they affiliate with others, get acquired or close like one just did in NJ.

I would've lost 10+ years with my grandpa if it wasn't for people who donated blood. Let me know what your PayPal, Venmo, or snail mail for a check address is and you'll have $180-300 every time you donate a pint.

Re: Brigham and Women’s Hospital has immediate need for blood donations

When I was in grad school, I had the time to donate blood as often as I was eligible, so I did. Apparently based on some measurement they did I'm an excellent platelet donor, so I used to do that too. Unlike in blood donation, in platelet donation they hook you up to a machine that cycles your blood out of one arm and back in the other. The blood that comes back in is significantly colder, which is an interesting sensation. By the end of the ~2 hour long donation, my body temperature would be down what felt like a couple of degrees. They always said to avoid exercise for a while, but that never stopped me from hopping on my bicycle and shooting back across Boston

I always do a double red, which means they suck it out, pull out the red blood cells, then pump it back in without red blood cells.

You should get a tax credit for every donation you make, based on the value it brings to the medical system. If that was put in place, I'm betting donations would skyrocket.

Nah. When you think about them base raw material being free it sounds so marked up. But as Smutty summed it up its getting safe blood from point A to B that builds so much cost into the product.

Guys above do automated procedures for either platelets which help clotting and are very beneficial to cancer patients or double reds which basically equal two donors worth of redcells from one donor. Thanks guys those take longer so your time in the chair is really appreciated.
