    Calling all computer savvy people!

I'm pretty good with computers but when it comes to any advanced stuff or hardware its just not my thing.

The laptop I use for my freelance stuff runs great, I keep it pretty clean and free of garbage but since its a year and a half old I think it could use a little "freshening up" y'know? Its pretty slow to boot up and just doesn't run quite like a new computer.

Any advice on cleaning/speeding it up? Programs I can download to clean out the reg and stuff?

    EDIT:

Its a gateway, with a 1.6ghz AMD turion 64, 960mb of RAM, running XP media center sp2

Check out this little suite from UniBlue.

I carry a copy on my USB drive just for tuning up tired and cluttered systems.

It has saved me from doing 18 hour fdisk>format>install OS>install all application marathon sessions many a time. The cost is worth it to me.

The Suite is 60 bucks but you can get by with the RegBoost and SpeedupPC components. Very easy to use interface and just about impossible to screwup a computer.

Beware that the demo version will only point out what is wrong with the PC and will not fix it.

I bought it out of desperation and have never regretted it.

not sure if XP 2005 media has the same setup as XP Pro, but give this a shot....
right click My Computer, select properties. In the advanced tab, click performance. By defualt, Windows will have all features checked off. You really only need the bottom 3, skip one up, and then that feature (see picture). With those items selected, you wont notice any display changes, just performance.

Then, run a disk cleanup and a few defrags. I usually run the degrag till the before & after pictures look the same. Also delete any cookies, history, etc from your browser. I even unhide my hidden folders to go to c:\documents and settings\USER\local settings\temp and delete all the files out of that temp folder.

I also have a list of certain services you can disable in start --> programs --> accessory --> administration tools --> services. If you want them, PM me. The performance features and services will make a good boost without adding RAM.

and if you're comfortable with editing the registry, delete any unnecessary strings in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE--> SOFTWARE --> Microsoft --> Windows --> Current Version --> Run & HKEY_CURRENT_USER --> SOFTWARE --> Microsoft --> Windows --> Current Version --> Run. If you have a subfolder called Option Components, get rid of it. You may want to just uncheck anything you know is safe to remove on MSCONFIG (Start --> Run) in the startup tab
