Dented hood, dented roof, smashed windshield, and dented drivers side pillar...car is a '13 subaru legacy premium with 137,465 miles...preliminary repair estimate (before dismantling it) is $3600...i figure the hood and windshield aren't bad...its the roof and divers side pillar that i'm worried about and the supports under the bodywork...car was parked and hit by a front end loader with a load of pvc pipe...i'm also not sure what insurance goes by as the worth of the car and i assume the estimate cost will go up when they take it apart...value vs repair cost is what i'm worried about

ACV on that car is right around that number. I wouldn't be surprised if the insurance company totalled it.

I assume the company that owns the FEL is covering this?
^ good point. If that company self insures they might just prefer to cut a check instead of go through a more normal claims process.

that sucks...i wanted to drive this car into the ground since it's paid off not have another loan out
FEL?...is was a construction company employee who hit it...i am going through my insurance since i have full coverage and my insurance is going to go to their insurance for reimbursement
they wanted to cut a check for the repairs and i'm sure they are good for it but i don't want to front any money at all for this...it's not my fault and it's already an aggravation for me
The ship has already sailed, but the hassle of dealing with them directly might have been worth the tradeoff of not totalling the car.
It might not be totalled though. Every company is different, but usually once the damage reaches a certain % of value they usually just write it off.
The mileage on the car is the killer, but depending on what value the company uses and what they find for comps will determine if they total or fix.
Based on the info I have, it could be pretty close. I'd be prepared for them to total it and thankful if they didn't.

Probably totaled. I'd buy it back if you just want to abuse it.
Sorry, FEL = front end loader. It's how we refer to them at work.
the only way this gets totalled is due to repair value exceeding car value, correct?...i assume there is no frame in the roof that can't be replaced right?...i know if you bend the main frame of a car it's totalled...since this happened while i was at work inspecting their construction work there may be something else that can be done...have to see what they find when they dismantle it and what the adjuster finds upon reinspection
thought about it but not sure it's worth it
gotcha...always call them loaders at work

this thread may turn into a new vehicle thread...who knows...wife has a 14 maxima that's not paid off yet and we now have a 1 year old plus 2 dogs so maybe we look at an suv for her and i take over her car...it sucks cause my car has been paid off for a few years now...so we'd be getting into 2 payments

Book says 7825 for that today, with the mileage deduction .
Needs to usually be 80 % of that to be totaled .

dang, take the insurance check, fix the windshield, leave the rest, and run that bitch into the ground
Get a quote to repair via your insurance, then take the check and just get the windshield replaced to get it functional. Who cares if the car is dinged up if it's just a DD beater.
Save the rest of the money to put towards your next ride once this thing shits the bed.

FWIW, the car is a unibody and the pillars are part of the structure, as opposed to a body on frame truck.
What's the difference between a bolt and a screw?
First you screw, then you bolt.
Yeah, why bother replacing anything other than the windshield on a 140k mile car?
Just make sure with a shop that there is no structural damage that would prevent it from being driven as is.

well that's good news
this may be what happens...i believe there are pillar airbags in this car...not sure if those were affected
i may take the money...but i also like having a car that's not all dinged up...not sure which way i would want to go

i may...as long as there is nothing that will compromise safety...i drive 86 miles each day for work and have to go through providence as well as drive my family around...so i may just fix the windshield and take the money or may just repair it or may let it get totalled and see if there is something else that can be done...car consumes oil (few quarts every 7500 miles) and the drivers side window interior weather strip rolls inside the door when i turn the window down...that's about all that's wrong with the car

A offer by a insurance company can usually be increased just by saying you found the exact same car and you want to buy that one. But it is way more money. Worked for me three times.
May the road rise to meet you, May the wind always be at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face.
$5500 in repairs...didn’t get totaled...I’ll be picking it up early this coming week

well i just noticed that my rear defroster isn't working...not sure if it's a fuse, the relay or the wiring...i will probably email the repair shop to see if they will take a look at it since they removed the rear windshield to fix the roof
