Still to many people out in the water lately, I can;t wait til Jan Feb when its 0 degrees and howling off shore to thin the crowd. One thing I will say if you don't have a set already, ear plugs.

Re: Carrying 8' board in truck

This old timer named Ed who used to work at the Watershed surf shop in RI when I started surfing told me, (after I told him I was frustrated because usually I’m good a learning difficult things in a hurry, but was sucking horridly at surfing) that nobody I was seeing in the water surfing well had been surfing less than ten years.

Now I’ve been surfing 18 years and I still suck.

I recognize that rock. I predict an outdoor basketball court not far away, on the other side of a chain link fence. If my MCL wasn’t blown out, I’d be out there too.

Forecast for pipe masters today looks sick:

*SUNDAY 10th: Building 12-20'+ faces, max sets to 22-25' faces possible washing out the lineup. NE trades.SWELL/SURF: New/large NNW swell builds in through the morning and holds over the afternoon. This will be a consistent, unruly swell at Pipe with triple overhead+ surf and max sets of 22-25' feet washing through from third reef.WIND: Latest model guidance indicates better wind; NE trades in the morning trending ENE through the day at moderate levels (9-13kts).TIDES: 1.3' high at 8:57am, 0' low at 3:12PM

Didn't surf the point today, though it was firing. Sought out a less crowded spot. Some good ones for sure.

Oh, and the new heater in the van RULES. That's all

went out again today, and the waves were totally different!

paddled out and saw some noob's on foam long boards like me...they weren't getting their paddle speed up and waves just went past them. They tried to smile and engage me, but I just nodded once and paddled around them; they were in the wrong spot anyways. I saw the first wave come in and caught it...sweet!

then the rest of the day sucked....could not catch a wave at all!

got pretty tired paddling against the waves go get past the break point...took periodic breaks and turtle rolled to get past them.

sunset was beautiful...exercise was awesome...pretty happy knowing how to differentiate between different wave conditions. Maybe again tomorrow or next week!

Re: Carrying 8' board in truck

    I finally did the combo!

I rode dirt bikes in the morning and served in the afternoon!

Unfortunately the water was flat at Seal Beach today LOL... I am really not the kind of person to say this but it was actually boring

The waves had no momentum and they were barely a foot tall. Would have been good for new people because there were not strong currents to paddle against and they could just body surf broken waves that were gentle

It was still awesome to go out because I feel so mellowed right now.. feels good

    first surf of 2018!

You guys get a snow day, I get a rain day

GoPro shoulder mount for surf SUCKS

Always curious about the effects of weather on the surf, I took a quick paddle out during this socal rain (I mean, drizzle) to see what the waves were like.

    looks like beard drool

To be honest, it was about the same...gentle currents at Seal Beach as usual...gentle breaking waves that were easy to catch on the foam topper. It's the storm that brought the rain which could create some different conditions.

Waves were pretty small...good thing because I am way out of shape!

Caught a couple longer ones (15-20 second), a few short ones, and went home.

My new electric vest might not make it feel like summer, but it surely slows the onset of hypothermia. Lol

    whatever keeps you going

went to San Onofre yesterday...was at poor conditions/1-2 feet

But the slow, easy breaking waves were just fun and easy to catch...I actually liked it better than Seal Beach!

A point or cobblestone reef will always be more fun than a beach break IMO. longer opportunities to surf the open face.

Re: Carrying 8' board in truck

man, today confirmed that I would never do any arctic/snow/freezing surfing...it was low 50's temp/windy w' 50's water temp and I couldn't feel my toes or fingers when I was done. I don't carry a lot of insulation, ya, so pretty much all you guys will be fine, but naah...this was my limit of fun. My ear started to hurt from the cold

windy, chilly, choppy day at seal beach today...woke up too late to surf w' some facebook group noobs, so I just surfed local solo. TBH, just like air travel, I much rather do it solo.

saw some kite surfers, and another guy who wasn't bothered by the cold or the "fair/poor" conditions

had a little bit of tiredness paddling against currents...kept drifting away from the break points...choppy waters meant much splashing into the eyes LOL...but still got to catch a couple easy breaking waves to get my fix

Heated vest! Thats cheating, honestly in a patagoina 5/4 i am dying from overheating almost all winter. Hell the last two times I went out was sans gloves.

It's always nice when the Patagucci is free. That said it's like paddling with cement blocks for hands and elastic bands holding them to your sides.
