cats can usually take care of themselves when it comes to an altercation with a dog, cats have faster reflexes

    Re: Cats and dogs...

So, had a pretty disappointing (and not the least bit unexpected) conversation with the neighbor.

Me: "So, we had a cat, your cat as a matter of fact, inside our fence this morning right as the dog was going out."
    Dude: "Yeah?"
Me: "Yeah, that's a problem. I can't have him in the back yard"
Dude "Oh, I think he would be fine. He still has all of his claws."

Oh, well fuck ME. By all fucking means let him come on over and carve my dog up in my own back yard. Matter of fact, how about I just leave the garage open so you can help yourself to my tools, drink my beer, piss on the toilet seat and leave the lights on.

I had a feeling it was going to be this kind of a party. He's not a bad dude, but what the fuck?

    Re: Cats and dogs...

Really want to thumb up that post, exclusively because of the gif.

I know my opinion on right and wrong plus $3 still wouldn't get us a cup of coffee these days. But IMO you've met your moral responsibility by fencing in the yard. If the cat happens to get injured or killed by the dog defending itself in an altercation... then quite frankly, oh well.

Clayton's little story depresses the living hell out of me. I can't imagine putting my own dog down to avoid a lawsuit that surely all involved would know is utter bullshit. In fact I'm reasonably confident I'd go broke defending my dog against such retardedness. Possibly get myself arrested getting between said hound and any animal control types the state saw fit to send my way.

    Sad.

But then that situation involved an unrestrained dog in the street. Nothing like your fenced in yard situation.

    Best of luck.

Eh. You tried. Do your own thing and let nature takes it's course. Like others have said, cat would probably stop the earth it would take off so fast when it saw your dog.

na, more often than not cat stands its ground and draws blood with a quick swipe of the dogs nose and the dog goes running

Unfortunately, it seems we may find out. Bear in mind this is for all intents and purposes an indoor cat who has spent way too much time over the last few weeks drying out 60-70' up in trees. I'm not much of a gambler, but I really do not like his odds.

    Yeah, I dunno... Maybe...

One time I got mugged back in the 90's when I was living in Harlem. My mistake, really... I knew better and got cocky. Six guys ran me down. I caught the first one with a decent right hand but it only made my situation worse. They gave me the boots pretty good. When I finally managed to stand up an NYPD cruiser just happened to round the bend. The perps were 100 feet away and I didn't flag the cruiser down. Why not? I lived there. If the NYPD couldn't deliver (let's be realistic) it would only make my living situation much, much worse. I'm a firm believer in not shitting where you eat (or live).

    Re: Cats and dogs...

I'm very much a cat person, and don't much care for dogs. But Tricky Mike is fully in the right here. He should be free to let his own dog into his own yard whenever he likes, and if the cat gets mauled or killed, it's the fault of the dumb cat and his dumb owners. The one risk is if, in the process, the cat injures the dog in some way (it gets an infection from a scratch, say), then that's an expense to Mike. Rightfully, the cat's owners would be responsible for making good on that, but good luck with that in real life.

Consider giving the cat a good blast from the water hose next time he is on your property, might convince him he's not welcome, and no harm to anyone.

Sounds like it's the cat's time. Seems pretty simple to me. I can bring my Shepherd bitch down if ya'd like, she'll clean this situation right the fuck up...

I have faster reflexes than a garbage truck. I am not taking one on head to head. It just comes down to overall power. The cat can jump and scratch all it wants, if that dog wants it dead, there is very little kitty is going to do to stop it. A timid dog will get the point that he went too far when he gets a claw across the nose. I watched my 110# sheppy/rotty mix get placed by a three legged cat in a vet's office. My dog didn't want to hurt him, just give a little sniff. It all depends on the dog's desire.

    Re: Cats and dogs...

Most of the dogs I've owned have backed down from cats, but I specifically remember every once in a while my Welsh Terrier, when confronted and attacked by a cat, would instinctively lash out and chase the cat away. We knew that if he ever caught it that he would have mangled it. Unlike cats, dogs have the instinct to grab an animal by the scruff and shake it until its back is broken. My parent's Cairn Terrier regularly does that to woodchucks out in the field.

The chances the dog will catch and kill the cat are pretty small, but its not entirely impossible.

Anyways, if I were in your position, I'd let nature take its course. If you come out one day and find the cat dead, bury it and let the owners think it got eaten by coy dogs. If your dog gets scratched up by the cat, call animal control.

    Re: Cats and dogs...

Wellllllll...They got to meet this morning.

Dog's doing his usual "IiiiiiiGGGGottttttaaaaaShhhhiiiiiit" dance at the back door. I stumble down the hall and let him out as per routine. I think we both spotted the cat at the same time.
I yell "NOOOO!!!!" as if that's going to have any effect and Mr. Dog goes sailing off the deck full throttle.

Cat does the deer in headlights thing just long enough for me to think "you better run, breakfast" and finally takes off towards the back corner. They both disappear behind the shed and I hear a loud crash into the fence. I think "cool, the cat just jumped the fence... Hopefully that's the lesson he needed."

Nope. The two shoot out the other side, with the dumbass cat choosing the long way across the yard and the dog gaining. Ooooooooh shit, here we go.

Cat makes a pretty nice lateral move at the right time and shakes the dog just long enough to make it over the picket fence. At this point I realize that the neighbor I talked to last night, who watched me sweat and swat mosquitos for 2 hours shoring up my fence in the dark had been standing there the whole time watching the cat stroll through my back yard, presumably looking for a spot to take a dump.

Cat goes sailing over the fence and, you guessed it, straight up a fucking tree (here we go again).

Dog runs right to the corner, looks directly at neighbor dude and immediately takes a shit (really hard not to laugh at this point).

I look at the neighbor, look at the cat climbing and as cunty as I can manage say "good thing he still has his claws, right?"

So, now, what's the over/under on this stint in the tree? I think 3.5 days sounds about right. I'm seriously considering the over.

    Cool. Some AM entertainment.

You know, I've honestly never seen a cat "tree'ed". I thought they just made that shit up for Leave it to Beaver or whatever.
That has to be a seriously dumb cat.

Next time take a quick look to see if the neighbor is within ear shot. If not replace "Nooo!!" with "Git 'em!".

Ahhh.. I'm probably headed to hell. See ya'll there.

    Re: Cats and dogs...

Luckily for me I dont think my dog understands cats. Our neighbor is the stereotypical cat lady. Feeds all the outside cats that happen to wander to her place and never leave. We did end up taking in one of the cats since it was obvious it was a pet at some point but that is were I drew the line for my wife.

And then on Monday he found himself these guys. He stood guard over them all night and was a bit sad when the lady came to take them the next morning.

Just because dogs are obedient and happy to wait on you hand and foot doesn't make a cat dumb in any sense of the word. It could be said the same that blind obedience is stupid too, right? I think it's a little harsh that you guys are so carefree in saying 'let the cat get mauled, teach it a lesson' basically. You wouldn't be saying the same if it dealt with your dogs, come on now.

In any case, SRT, the cat leaving mice on your property is its way of thanking you for taking care of it. Obviously, you are doing a much better job than your super negligent owner who keeps taking month long vacations. I would've adopted that cat long ago. And if the owner as home and you are still taking care of the cat? Why not adopt it outright? Obviously, the stupid shit of a person is pretty happy with that situation. Might as well make it your own.
