    anyone ever been to Chernobyl?

I'm working on planning a small job in Chernobyl for later next year and I'm trying to figure out if its the type of place I go to and get out as quickly as possible and then soak in a tub for the next 8 weeks or if it's not that bad and I can plan a moto adventure around it and drive to it and back again without feeling like I've been way to close hell? I don't think I would do it on a motorcycle but a car is certainly doable from where I live in London. I would probably take a week to do the trip in a car and the job would only be a day or 2 tops then back home with some exploring on the side.

never been there. I hear it's safe, or so say the Russian inspectors. I'd wear a lead cup just in case...

They do tours of Pripyat and portion of the reactor area. As I understand, its pretty safe for the most part, as long as you stay on the roads, and out of the Exclusion Zone (an area of ~20 miles around the reactor). There are gates to keep you out of the bad areas.

I will be in the exclusion zone and beyond the gates. I'm told I will be able to touch the sarcophagus that surrounds the reactor building. I won't be there long but I'm afraid I will start getting all sorts of paranoid once I'm there and not want to drive back and just get back asap.

I could be that close yes, at least that's what I'm told per the job briefing. I plan on being as far away as possible however. I can use robots to get close if I need to.

If for work I'd assume you'll be carrying instrumentation (detection), appropriate H&S gear as applicable to the environment, and only stay in areas for lengths of time according to a work plan reviewed by your in house safety control person (not one made up by a local with nothing to lose). Not being paranoid but safety doesn't seem to be a thing over there.

Or, as it was put to me on a "sketchy" job site some years ago "how old are you and are you planning on having kids"?

it's not really the job I'm worried about it's more my potential emotional trauma. being in basically a former war zone and being soaked in radiation may make me snap and just take a flight home asap. I don't think pictures are doing that place justice. I'm afraid it might be like when I worked at Auschwitz. it screwed me up for weeks and I thought I would be fine. I didn't even consider that it would bother me but it did.

I'd get my own dosimeter and check it on a regular basis. I wouldn't trust the ones the contractors there provide.

I'm not sure Chernobyl is on the same plane as Auschwitz when it comes to horrific scenes. My wife and I took tours of a couple of concentration camps when visiting her mother in Germany. I'd rank those as a bit worse than uberbad industrial accidents.

Re: anyone ever been to Chernobyl?

I have this book that was amateurly published, it gives a phenomenal history of Chernobyl pieced together by an amateur historian who was just really into trying to learn the "real" facts, since so much of it was conflated due to the cold war and such. The author had a few copies he sold, I found via reddit. Happy to loan you my copy, it's a quick but really good read.

Make sure you vet the tour company and avoid the ones with glowing customer reviews.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the Top Gear episode where Jeremy Clarkson's Volkswagen ran out of fuel in Chernobyl:

Re: anyone ever been to Chernobyl?

I've been through the Chernobyl region a half dozen times. Although not since the war broke out. I used to head the Chernobyl Children Project in the early 2000's. We brought kids from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine to the U.S. for treatment in Boston. I've been in and out of the Exclusion Zone many time. (We called it the dead zone.) Over 300 villages left just the way they were when the plant exploded. Even food still on the tables. I'd be glad to help you anyway I can. PM me and we can talk on the phone. Wonderful people. Love Kiev, but it's become a bit war torn since the separatist began their campaign. The Chernobyl Museum in Kiev is a good stater coarse on what happened. Medical facilities are very rudimentary compared to the West. Minsk is easy to fly in and out of as well. It's very communist and a bit behind the times but it's interesting to see. You can fly into Moscow and take an 11 hour train ride to the site, but I wouldn't go that route unless you have natives traveling with you. It's a little dangerous. Let me know when you're going, maybe I'll tag along. I miss the wonderful people. -Mike
