not sure what you're getting at but to clarify I never said this was in the motorcycle industry. Yes, I know it was probably implied.

It was just a cheeky joke that no one makes good money in motorcycling. I thought I remembered that you said it was a job in bikes.

Re: Long Commute for Dream Job?

I didn't mind a commute when I was younger, now, I can't imagine commuting, especially on a bike, wrong time of day with too much traffic, I don't care if it's going in the other direction, as soon as you get off highway, everyone is making a left turn in front of you

If you can flex your hours to put your commute after or before rush, will make the commute more enjoyable and safer

well i change my opinion...commuting 85 miles one way to work on a bicycle would require lance armstrong blood transfusions 2-3 times a week

...but seriously go for it...just make sure it doesn't make you hate what you love

Update: After a bit of back and forth I have accepted the position. The new gig is giving me a car until my lease is up where I'll have to decide if I will continue commuting or if I will move.

Cheers to taking risks and not living in regret.

Re: Long Commute for Dream Job?

Starting in January I will be reducing my commute by over 174 miles. The new (rental) house is 3 miles from work. In ~5mo I have covered over 20k miles in the company car and gained what I consider a large amount of weight. Additionally, the commute and probably the job have added some stress at home so as of right now both the GF and I have decided to go our separate ways when I move out. Admittedly, the (smallish) town I am moving to isn't for everyone. While the commute isn't horrible, I have realized it is not something I wish to sustain.

On the bright side, I am really enjoying the job. For the first time in my life, I enjoy going into work and I can see very clearly that the quality of my work does indeed impact the company. I am encouraged to do well, because quite frankly, the company depends on me. I'm not just an appliance who is easily replaced and I'm surrounded by people obsessed with riding as much as I am. If I want to leave early because I need to get a ride in, they get it. When we get new products, I'm excited to go and check them out, and it's not frowned upon when a meeting gets derailed because we're just bullshitting about riding. It feels great when I see people enjoying our products and I can talk about work to anyone because most people can relate to the product and/or small size of the company.

Oh, and I'm reducing my cost of living by over 30%. I'll be rocking a home with a 3 car garage and I bought myself a dual sport to explore the new area. Apparently, single guys with their shit together are a hot commodity around here...or so I'm told. So I'm excited to make the move, get back on my exercise routine, and maybe meet a small-town girl.

I'm glad I took this job, hope it continues to make me happy, and possibly lead to something great.

So moral of the story, long commutes are soul crushing? Good luck. What dual sport did you buy?

Yup, doable but soul crushing. I got a WR250R, it came with warp 9 street wheels and the factory dirts. Will probably ride it to work M-F then take it off road on the weekend.

drove out to barstow today...there is so much riding out there that I doubt I can ever cover it all

I wish I lived in the IE on the way home...got sleepy on the 2hr50 min drive home and took a nap at a gas station. I also woke up at 5:30am and drove 2hr10min to get there though. may just try not to get killed by the other LA buttheads in their dad's 70k raptor and try cleghorn/pilot rock truck trail next time since it's just a tad over an hour from me...probably 20-30 mins for you

    git r dun

Good for you. Right now my commute is 2 hours on a good day / 3 hours on a bad day, and I hate it. Considering a move to really reduce that
