My commute from Wilmington to Westborough was 5 hours and 10 minutes.

Usually about a 35 min drive

I hear ya, all people leaving their jobs/school/whatever in a 2hr time span is a recipe for disaster, regardless of weather. I stayed at work in Westboro until about 7p. 495 and 290 still packed w/ snow, but i had no problem moving at 40mph. Only added about 20minutes to my 50min commute.

My buddy left from Brockton around noon-ish to Marlboro via 495. Easily under an hour normally, yesterday took him over 6hrs. +600%

My sis drove from Sudbury to Westboro 35min normally took 3hrs. So also about +600%.

4 hours for Burlington to Boston. The first 3 miles took 3 hours. I sat with my parking brake on for a solid 15 minutes at one point. A semi was stuck across THREE lanes of 128. Finally we get moving again and people spread out to have two lanes moving.

+100 on the AWD. Once I got onto Rt. 2 I was doing 50 on top of the snow while everyone else is crawling at 25ish. That car is fun to drive.

Stoopidestest fookin' thing, everyone leaving work early. Okay New England, everybody go home NOW. Just fookin' brilliant. Of course, you could work for the family business and not get to leave early. That way there you only catch everyone fuckstick on the road that left at 2:00 and can't drive to save their fookin' lives...

like I said, AWD is for people that don't know how to drive, if you did, you'd be able to keep that Benz or Bimmer (Beamers are bikes) pointed in the right direction and moving

Yup, just like ABS is for people who don't know how to brake. Too bad it will stop the car faster than you every time. RAWR TECHNOLOGY!

ABS sucks ass! Wunna the worse vehicle mandates EVER! Every 'study' I've read or seen about ABS indicates increased braking incidents almost every year since ABS was mandated in cages. Total crock of shit. At least in the early days, you could easily disable it by simply swapping out master cylinders. Did it in my pick-up truck and Blazer. I wish we had the option of either disabling them or getting vehicles without 'em. I'd much prefer to control my braking myself!

The studies that i've seen only have increased stopping distance in gravel/sand where you have no traction and the dragging of the tires slows the car faster than the tires decelerating. The advantage of abs is also the ability to steer the car while emergency braking, since you can't control a vehicle that has the wheels sliding across the pavement.

    "The Commute From Hell" thread

ABS and traction control are very frustrating to people who learned to drive in vehicles not equipped with them.

Tim O'Neil, a rally driver who owns a rally school in New Hampshire (Team O'Neil Rally School & Car Control Center) regularly rents out his facility to auto magazines for testing. He is a very, very good driver. He says that he has, numerous times, timed himself around a course with the ABS and Traction control turned off, and then again with it on, and has *always* been faster with the systems turned on.

Like others, I have experienced the low-speed "When the fuck is this thing going to stop" phenomena ABS creates in deep snow. One thing you'll note is that this is always at lower speeds. The system is set up to prevent higher speeed incidents; at a lower speed you stop more quickly because a pile of snow forms in front of a locked tire and slows you down considerably. If you are driving in slow stop and go traffic, its definitely safer to just turn the ABS off.

And while I also agree with Randy that a rear wheel drive car is more fun and controllable in the snow, I drive an AWD car because I dont like being stuck.
