No worries. It's gone and I've already forgotten what it looked like. I knew it was a very specific buyer it just took longer for them to show up than I had hoped for. At least I'm not having to do the same bullshit in the spring.

Have you tried it? It looks pretty ideal even with the added hoops to jump through. It doesn't say anything about data security/redundancy though. What if one (or more) of the storage contracts flakes out or has an issue? Seems like I'd be murdered by my wife. Maybe I could put my questionables into that since they're all replaceable anyway and put my private stuff into your dusty box. A free box and open pipe sounds like it was meant to be. I just need to find out what I'm doing with the encryption and find some sort of program with checksum since it's so many files.

I haven't tried it. The whole blockchain setup means your data is spread out through many different hosts. No single point of failure. Read up on it, pretty interesting.

Sweet. For whatever reason I thought that the blockchain was just for the transaction portion. I'll see if I can get it installed on a freebsd jail late tonight and see what happens.

So yeah, they use blockchain for the transactions, then dice the data up into blocks that get pushed to 30 hosts, with the redundancy such that as long as 10 hosts are live you can reconstruct the data. This may or may not also be blockchain based but I can't see that working out well long term. The hosts are other end users that are looking to build up Siacoin for their own use by offering bandwidth and space.

They hold significant chunks of Siacoin as collateral for the term of the data contract so people are discouraged from shutting down their space.

Yeah, their spiel is 1/2 at the end of the contract. They also downgrade your rating as a host if you flake so you'll get less contracts. They seem to think that's enough. I'd like to think that if hosts bail they would resilver the data.

I think the expectation is with a 3 month contract term, if a host flakes you've got 29 left providing redundancy to support the term, when you autorenew at the term end the resilver happens as 30 new currently viable hosts are chosen?

I'm pretty sure that due to the size, the statistical possibility of drive failure or data corruption becomes something greater than lottery-odds. Been a little while since I looked at the math on it, but something to keep in mind as drive sizes and data storage climbs. A decade ago, copying 30gig of data to your old drive as a temporary hold wasn't nearly as risky as copying terabytes.

So you think : I'll buy two of them and copy to both. Surely both won't fail. Find the math before you do that. I'm pretty sure it doesn't help much as much as you'd think. The odds are still pretty slim you'll have trouble, but depending on the data, how much risk of failure are you willing to accept?

I couldn't find the hard specs on that drive, but it looks like most of them have an ST8000AS0002 shingled media archive drive in them. (If using with ZFS, and not using as archive storage do some research, turn off atime, consider a larger ashift value, etc.) Based on the Archive's specs I tossed numbers into a RAID Reliability Calc and got 0.00063979.... probability of a read error doing a rebuild of 2 x 8TB in RAID 1.

Deal at bestbuy today for an 8TB Western Digital external USB for $140 so I pulled the trigger. Supposedly it's got a red drive inside that's valuable enough that people buy them to shuck and resell so I can probably get my money back. I'll probably make a second backup of my wife's files to the cloud just in case though.

Still messing around with SIA but my linux skills are so shitty that I haven't figured out how to get it to run yet. Mixing in go and installing from source is throwing me off.
