unless there is some ignorant fear mongering local ordinance against beekeeping, there is no reason you can't do it in a city

2 cups fresh picked wild cranberries
    1 cup raw honey
    1 cup spring water

place water and honey in sauce pan, bring to boil, add cranberries, when it returns to boil, reduce heat, boil for 10 minutes

allow to cool, refrigerate before serving

best cranberry sauce I ever had

Mine have been out a lot as well...almost daily for the past week. Both hives appear strong, but it worries me when they are this active this time of year and eating their winter food supply faster than normal

Re: Convince me not to give up bee keeping

my bees have never been out in winter like this, not even 2011 when they came out for the season 7 weeks early

I would feed mine if I thought there would be 3 or 4 nice days in a row, I hope I left mine with enuf honey, I harvested honey late in season but I got the frames spun quickly and back into the hive to clean up and I was able to feed them for a couple weeks before cold weather set in

when they were out at christmas, they were still able to find pollen, but not yesterday, we don't have much snow this year, but the ground is snow covered

We have a couple of batches of flower wines going now; one dandelion, and one lavender. We'll see how they come out.

The meads I did were a straight honey mead (which does have a touch of citrus for balance), and a batch that was more of a melomel, about half and half honey and dark cherries. Both were good, although as I mentioned the whole process takes about a year and a half. Nearly all the meads you buy, and most of those done privately, are much too sweet. I fermented mine to completion, so they were pretty dry, and had much more of a wine-like character.

I usually see them out in the snow every year, and they were out after the big snowstorm a week and a half ago here. It's your first year with Italians if I recall? I fed mine for a few weeks after taking the honey this year, but I also took the honey earlier than usual. Christmas of this year, I fed them 1/2 gallon of sugar water each hive over 3 days.

Unlike Italian motorcycles, these Italians have been reliable and not needed any parts, and they perform as expected every day

Re: Convince me not to give up bee keeping

So I'm going to set up a hive this spring, my dad's been keeping bees for 40 years or so and he's getting out of it. I'm getting all his equipment plus two hives, a regular and a top bar. I was going to dive in and try the honey flow super, but I think I'll take it a little slower the first year. So a couple questions for you guys: what the best orientation for a hive, south-east facing? How critical is this for the bees? I'm trying to find a suitable location away from the house. I might get two packages but if I get one which hive would you go with, with me being new at it?

Re: Convince me not to give up bee keeping

all the bees in one of my hives died sometime in the past week, they were out like crazy just a week ago, yesterday, I noticed only one of my 2 hives had active bees, opened it up, all the bees were dead, but not from starvation, there is still honey left in the hive

the hive that is still active does not have the activity it had a week ago,

trees are just beginning to bud

    disease?

I am curious about the hard freeze we had

Every bud on my apples is a black pea

All dying is odd isn't it ?

Re: Convince me not to give up bee keeping

all my bees in both hives have died, plenty of honey left over from winter so they didn't starve

luckily my supplier is still taking orders, I ordered a package to be picked up May 20

The drought must be worse up north, I've taken about 30 lbs out of 7 frames so far, and I still have a super I'm gonna take for myself when they finish capping it. Very impressed with the production for a first year hive.

Re: Convince me not to give up bee keeping

I haven't dug into my 2 hives yet, but from talking with other local bee keepers, I have high hopes of a productive season. We have had a pretty extreme drought here as well, but I also have 30 acres of ponds and wetlands just on my property. Also, from what I've heard, the gypsy moth caterpillars eating all the canopy in the area, has created a strong understory with new growth.
I plan to pull honey within a week...doing what I've done the past 3 years as well, taking 90% of their honey, then feed them aggressively for the next month.

Re: Convince me not to give up bee keeping

I'm sitting pretty at about two and a quarter supers on one hive. Lost my second hive mid year when the queen dies and just didn't catch it quick enough. Re-upped on a queen but she didn't take. Managed to capture a swarm mid summer but their production is down. I think I'll be happy with the two and a quarter supers though.
