Re: Convince me not to give up bee keeping

the wetlands adjacent to my property are bone dry and the river is not flowing at all, a few scatterd pools here and there, best part of the season for honey production in my location is the first part of spring with the red maple bloom, my bees filled up the outer frames of the brood supers with honey by the end of May, and virtually nothing since

I have a fear of wax moth infestation, we determined that that is what killed the 2 hives that survived the winter but less than a week into this season

Re: Convince me not to give up bee keeping

I was slacking this spring and when tearing down our son's ice rink, I folded up the massive white tarp (semi neatly) and stashed it about 120 feet away from the hive. It appears to hold a fair amount of water even in its crumbled/semi folded state and the honey bees absolutely love it. Days after it rains they're in it drinking. About once a week during the dry spell I gave it a squirt with the hose probably 10-15 gallons worth. I'm pretty sure that's the only thing that saved my production this year.

It seems a late frost killed off a lot of apple blossoms. Does that (late frost) impact the bees?

the frost itself doesn't impact the bees, but the loss of blossoms does

Little to none, only. There's no nectar in an apple blossom, and the bees rely on a large variety of plants

Better late, than never...just pulled two full supers of honey, 1 from each give..and a few random frames from the supers below. What a range in color of dark vs light honey this year. Pretty impressed seeing its the first time I've even looked at my hives all year.

I saw very few drones in both hives, but good volume of workers.
I could have taken more honey, but I don't have time to feed aggressively for the next few weeks.

I've had the entrance reducers on all summer, it again, has worked surprisingly well.

Rookie mistake. You're supposed to decoy the area with lovely picnic baskets, the bears can't resist.

    That sucks!

I inadvertently tested the top line of our bear fence last week when I threw a leg over it before throwing the switch. 'Bout damn near jumped out of my skin. Fingers crossed we don't have any issues, even with bears on the game cameras once or a month or so.

Last year people were stopping at my hose asking if they could pick apples. This year there is not 1 apple on it.

There were not many bees in my flowers this year either. I try to have flower blooming all year for bees, but they were relatively scarce this year. Does it actually get too hot for bees to be out?

I have yet to see it to hot for bees to be out, my bees seem most active on the hottest days anyways. Also, normal temperature inside a bee colony is around 98

We haven't, we keep most of ours for our own use, instead of buying store bought sugar, and give some away, We also make good use of the wax and propolis as well as collecting pollen

Yes, I sell most of mine. I've got regulars that buy from me every year that get first dibs, then I'll sometimes post up what's left for sale. I usually only keep a quart or so for myself

Re: Convince me not to give up bee keeping

because we had to burn most of our hive components last year due to a moth infestation and the one hive we did save was knocked over by a bear, we are starting over again this season yet again, we will be ditching the conventional hives and go to a top bar hive.

lower honey production, but better wax production, easier to maintain, no heavy supers to lift, open the hinged roof, and the top bar honeycomb is right there at working height

Interesting. How does the cost of the hive compare to a conventional ten frame setup?

We lost both of our hives a few weeks after thanksgiving. Filled to the brim with winter honey, sugar feeders topped off. Barely a bee to be found. Rather peculiar actually.

Have three kits coming arriving mid April.

similar cost if you purchase, but much easier to build on your own and make modifications in design for your site

much more like how bees would work if they were wild, the best type of hive if you want to produce honey that you float a junk of wax honeycomb in because you have all natural honeycomb and no wax foundation that is made from reprocessed beeswax that may have god knows what chemicals in it that another beekeeper used to control mites, etc.

we keep bees primarily for pollination, and not honey production
