    Crabbin in Maryland

Any of you do any time catchin crabs in Maryland? Not the kind you get from filthy sailors.

Spending some time on one of the tributaries to Choptank River next month. Have a house with a nice long private dock. Thinkin of trying to put some of those delicious blue crabs in my face hole.

Read up on a it a bit. Hand line: chicken parts on a string + net is the simplest. Willing to drop a small coin or two on a trap if it ups my chances of ending up with a meals worth. Anyone every do this? Pointers and tips for gear?

    Re: Crabbin in Maryland

I did it years ago... chicken or a whole fish on a string.

Throw it out... hand over hand bring it in... and at least one, usually two crabbies hanging on.

The fish worked better than chicken.

My dad and I did it for fun down the cape with pepperoni...worked amazing. I dunno if that was a secret of his or if it was just our lunch.

Did it all the time as kids in SC off the piers. Traps are literally only a few bucks (bass pro or Wal-Mart will have them). I like the metal 'pyramid' style ones, but they all work. Tie chicken legs, thighs, etc onto the bottom of the trap and drop it. A few beers later pull it up and throw the crabs in a bucket, repeat. Be prepared to kick the spider crabs off the pier when you haul them up, they are nasty.

Yea as others have said, grab a trap they are cheap and make it easy. Blue crabs can swim pretty well so they have the tendency to jump off and swim away just as you are about to pull them out of the water that is unless you are using a trap.

I've used a pyramid trap, tied a chicken leg/thigh and tossed it in the water, wait a minute or two, pull it back out full of crabs , can't imagine an easier way to catch them

Maybe if they walk right into your steamer pot?

    Re: Crabbin in Maryland

I grew up camping with family friends every summer down in Chesapeake Bay and we specifically went there to do crabbing. It was back in the late 80s but I can still feel the damn mosquitoes and the smell of our hands after eating buckets full of blue crab.

So much fun though...and literally it was just tying a chicken leg to a string and dropping it down. You cannot mess it up.

Chicken leg on string worked mint, with some heavy washers to weigh it down.

House we rented had a couple big traps too, so used them as well.

Crab is tasty and easy to catch, but man it's a lot of work to eat.

that's how we do it when we visit my in-laws in Virginia Beach. Kids love it and its a blast when catching is good, they usually come in on low tide at night or atleast that's when we go out

I've never known RI to be a good spot to crab. But I'm not into the crab "scene", so perhaps it is?

I've never been, but I did a bit of googling after this thread and it seems like it's plenty doable. Much more so than upstate NY

Paul I've caught crabs in nearly every state up and down the eastern seaboard. I used to be an avid fisherman, successful one could even argue.
