Dont forget to check into Plex. If you find some guys who are willing to share their servers with you (like me) you can get access to all sorts of stuff. Its pretty much like Netflix but we have control over what content goes on it.

Its free on most devices too

What ISP are all you cord-cutters using? I am hoping to avoid giving Verizon my money.

    Cutting the cord....

Comcast w/blast. Cost is higher for the blast vs their standard Internet service, but at least I'm not paying close to $200 for hundreds of channels I don't watch. I'm now paying half of that with my internet service and streaming services combined.

    Re: Cutting the cord....

I'm using cox basic. No problems running one kodi system at a time. 2 are good as well if both are viewing in SD and I have a good source. Sources are the key. A bad one will buffer no matter how much speed your system is capable of.
On a side note I was at the big e this weekend and there was a company really pushing cord cutting and they were using a basic kodi system and charging $400 a piece. They are just targeting people who can't figure it out on there own or don't know about it. Ive built fully running standalone kodi systems for 20 bucks. Twice.

Revisiting this... Still haven't snipped cable yet.

Anyone have a fire TV stick I can borrow? Thinking about getting one and loading it with Kodi but I want to make sure it works with my set-up. Currently have a Plasma with no USB input... but my Onkyo receiver does. Just want to make sure it works smoothly.

The number of gadget names, acronyms, and piles of different solutions/platforms for doing this in this thread is one of the main reasons I (and many others as well) haven't done this yet. It just seems really complicated. I'm not a tech guy really, but capable enough, and it doesn't sound simple to get everything you want.

That being said, I'm definitely going to move into a no-contract mode when I can and evaluate options.

You only need HDMI, the USB is for power only. Can just plug it into a wall wort.

Yeah..... that's why I haven't cut the cord sooner.

My planned solution for that is a slingbox at my parents house.

So...any house with an internet connection that is out of the Bruins local area will suffice for this, if the owner agrees? My mom lives out West, don't know if she even has cable

If your mom has a good internet connection & wants to watch NESN, you install a slingbox & let her tap into it. Now she has control of your TV from her location. You both end up watching the same thing though.

    Re: Cutting the cord....

Ok. Can't see that happening every time I wanna watch the bruins, especially with the time difference.

Fortunately (I guess?), their early season performance is making it easier to feel like I wouldn't be missing much if I cut the cord and can't watch them. Still will catch plenty of games on tv at the bars after beer league hockey 2-3 times a week. The way the D looks, it's too bad Chiarelli can't be fired twice for letting Boychuk go...

    Re: Cutting the cord....

Are you talking about you cutting the cable or her?

If you're saying you wanna cut your cable and put a slingbox at her place, she probably doesn't have NESN out on the West coast.

The slingbox allows you to broadcast whatever TV channels YOU have at your existing cable box to wherever you are via the web. So if you put it at her place, you're basically just tapping into her cable box. If she doesn't have NESN then it's a moot point.

    Re: Cutting the cord....

Talking about me cutting the cord. I doubt she has or could get nesn. Is there no way for me to access the Bruins using an NHL center ice package at her location, since she is out of the local area and could see Bruins games? In other words, I can't "sling box" or similarly access her streaming internet signal, only a cable tv subscription?

I just coughed up 360 bucks for two months cable/phone/broadband yesterday, when all I really want is the broadband.
I'm thinking the Bruins may have to bite the dust

If she's on the west coast she should be able to see Bruins games on Center Ice, because she's outside of NESN's territory. It works the same way with ESPN. When NESN has the Sox game, ESPN is blacked out in New England.

Yeah, that's my point...I cannot get the Bruins on center ice because I am in their local area, but she could because she is on the west coast; my question is, can I sling box or otherwise see, HERE, the Bruins game she could receive THERE? Assuming she would help me...

This is all sounding like way too much trouble.

    Re: Cutting the cord....

For $180 a month some of you guys pay for this, why not just go to a bar 4 times a month to watch the games?

Keep in mind, nearly a third of what you watch is advertisements. Yes, you are paying to see that many ads.

I'm never going back. When I watch TV elsewhere and a commercial comes on, my brain is all "WTF IS THIS SHIT".

But then again, I don't SPORTS like so many others.

Or, find someone local that has two TV's (one in the kitchen or something). Have them put the Slingbox on it. Then, odds are they are never using it when you wants to be SPORTS'ing.

Or, find someone that likes to SPORTS as much as you like to SPORTS. Then when they are SPORTS'ing, you can be SPORTS'ing on the same TV as they are with the Slingbox.

Yes. The whole point of the slingbox is to see whatever the cable box has access to that has a slingbox attached to it.

So if you install it on your mom's cable box over there and log into it here, you can take over her TV remotely. You're effectively sitting in her living room with her remote control.

Yeah, that was my point. You get blocked out here because you're in the territory, but she's not. If she purchases center ice, and you send her a slingbox, you'll be able to log in and watch the Bruins games that way. But if she wants to watch TV while the game is on, you're SOL.

Agreed, I would not go to those lengths to just get 1 channel. I'm on board with Clayton. Go to the bar or a buddy's house, haha.

Edit: Pete beat me to it.

Unless she has a second TV (not sure if a second box is required or not. I think it is?).

If she wants to watch the game, too, then it doesn't matter.

There was a note when I started Kodi about a lot of updates within the Kodi addon community and that if you want to watch live TV, NHL hockey (PETE), MLB baseball, to check out their blog for more info: Unofficial Kodi Addons & Android TV Reviews, for hockey, specifically How-To Watch Live NHL Hockey on Kodi (10/2015).
