That being said, I'm definitely going to move into a no-contract mode when I can and evaluate options.
Pick a starting point and dive in. You don't have to cancel your TV package to try a device and maybe a cancel-anytime Netflix subscription. You're right that at the moment, there isn't really a standardization. Things are evolving quickly. Accept that what is true now might be very different a few years down the road as we move towards a standard.

I'd argue the big ones are : Amazon Fire, Roku, and AppleTV. The Firestick is $40. For average person with no specific requirements, and not a gadget-nut, I'd say that's a good starting point.

    Re: Cutting the cord....

    Current Setup:
    Dumb TV
    -Onkyo receiver
    --Comcast Cable
--Laptop w/ Bluetooth keyboard (for Netflix, dvds, streaming whatever)
Only subscription right now is Netflix. Might get Amazon Prime and maybe Hulu Plus if I see stuff on there I like.

Ordered a Fire TV stick last night. Gonna try it out in stock form but then I think I'm gonna go the Kodi route with it.

It's short money and there isn't a commitment beyond the $40. You chose wisely.

I have had all three for the 2 or 3 years since I've cut the cord (Netflix, Hulu+, Prime). I have watched Netflix ~ 98% of the time... Not that the others don't have value (actually, I don't value Prime all that much; at least for ease of use), but Netflix has kept me plenty entertained so far. YMMV

Yeah I don't have much of an issue finding stuff to watch on Netflix, but Jackie will occasionally find something on Amazon she wants to watch.

We'll see once I make the final snip. Probably gonna call up Comcast next week & cancel... then I'm thinking we'll sign up for Fios.

Same here. I use Amazon Prime more for the free shipping. It's worth the $99 annual fee.

I use Hulu because they run current TV show series, instead of running at least a season back, like Netflix does. But, the good with the bad . . . Hulu's $7.99 service has a few commercials in their programming. To go commercial free, it will cost you $14.99 monthly. To save a few bucks, I'll deal with 4 minutes of commercials per 1 hour show.

Things that are worth watching on Amazon for shows:

Transparent: I liked this way more than I expected.

The HBO library: Sopranos, Veep, The Wire, etc, just not the most recent seasons and no GoT

Catastrophe: surprisingly honest and funny, loved it, especially considering our current situation

Expect this to take longer than a few minutes, until the "customer retention specialist" finally gives up, and expect mega-pressure to try to make you change your mind. Maybe because so many peopke cry wolf about quitting just to get a better rate?

Yeah I can't wait to call Crapcast in the next few days to argue that they've been charging me extra for a whole year (I have the contract to prove it) and why I should keep paying $45/mo for just internet when I can get the same thing from Frontier plus a year of Amazon prime for $30/mo.

    Re: Cutting the cord....

I called to cancel, knowing they'd play that game. And I was pretty sure there was no way they could give me a deal worth staying. I was ready to cut. So here I am a few months later with a new promo package

The problem is if you have your internet and TV from Comcast, the internet is at a reduced rate. That's separate from the combo promo rates too. So just internet alone is quite expensive. IIRC, the net total price a month was going to be ~$70/mo inc. tax&fees for the internet I was paying ~$50/mo for under a package (that no longer had promos applied). When they offered me a promo that was ~$85/mo for more bandwidth, a few channels, the HD box, and HBO It was hard to turn down on principle. Because it seemed to make sense financially. I have a feeling they're doing anything they can just to keep their subscriber numbers from falling.

Just call and inform them that you will no longer be paying for their service and you have recorded this call for your own records.

Same here. We watch Netflix probably 90% of the time and the wife watches several TV shows on Hulu. We have Prime for shipping and normally did not find content to watch - at least to the point we don't even check what's available on Prime anymore.

I hate Comcast pretty badly...but if you need 'net service, then you need 'net service. If you have no other options for providers, at least swap the account to a different name to keep getting a new customer promotion.

This isn't particularly relevant given the comments in this thread but I'd just like to point out that the account is already in my name.

Comcast has been on my shit list since they showed up for the install without a dvr, without a second cable box, and without something else...(maybe the modem/router?)...

I think my words were "what the f*** did they bring?! Three remotes and a lollipop?!?!"

They then tried to charge me for having to come back a second time and finish the install. It's been all downhill from there. They do not want to me to get on the phone.

Only works if the different name has NEVER had an account with Comcast before. I've tried to play that game before and been shot down. New customer promotion is only for NEW customers, or at least that is what I was told at the time.

Edit: Curious how that works with people that have the same name......John Smith, Mike Jones etc.

    Re: Cutting the cord....

Okay... been playing with Kodi for the last few days. Was frustrated as hell at first cuz I didn't know how to really use it, but I'm getting the hang of it now after installing the tvaddons.ag addon (which included Genesis, Phoenix, etc).

Question: I have a 1tb external hard drive attached to my router via a USB port... I was able to get it so that Kodi recognizes it as a file source and can play what's on there by pointing it to an SMB address (smb://tplinklogin/volume 1), but what I CAN'T do is get Kodi to download movies ONTO it... it'll only save locally. This sucks cuz 1080p movies buffer like crazy when I try to stream. I'd rather download in full and play it later.

Now I found the spot in the settings where you can change the movie download address, but it'll only let me browse my home network, which doesn't have the hard drive listed...

Was anyone able to find a way to manually enter the smb address into the download directory field?

Yeah, all the shit you're saying sounds too complicated. I'll keep chillin' until someone comes out with a comprehensive, user-friendly solution. Huge market opportunity here for anyone that can put something together and gain some traction.

If you (or anyone else) just wants Netflix/Hulu/AmazonHD, no need for anything complicated. Just buy an Amazon FireTV or a Roku. Plug-n-play. I think what you want already exists. He's going the techie route - with network shares and locally hosted videos etc etc. With an open source firmware (Kodi). Anyone who wants limited nerd factor, user-friendly stuff: ignore Kodi commentary.

Anyone who can figure out a Playstation can probably figure out a regular smart TV accessory device in under two hours.
