    Re: Cutting the cord....

Or just use a PS3/PS4. You can get all the Amazon/Netflix/Hulu/HBO etc apps on there for free.

    Or, use a FireStick/AppleTV/Roku.

I don't use Kodi. Don't see the need. What does it do for me if I just want to stream Netflix/HBO/Amazon?

If you JUST want to stream Netflix/HBO/Amazon? Nothing.

But all we have right now for subscriptions is Netflix and Kodi opens up a TON more options way beyond what Netflix/HBO/Amazon can give you. I just downloaded The Martian in full 1080P last night.

I was talking to CEO's comment that it sounds too complicated. Not your situation....

So Kodi is like Popcorn Time.

May want to limit your streaming of illegal stuff if you are on your own ISP......

    Re: Cutting the cord....

Found out something interesting about using AirPlay FTV Stick, if you try to play movies that you purchased via the Apple Store, you can't play them over the 3rd party AirPlay app.

I only have half a dozen movies that I purchased through the Apple Store, so I'm not too worried about it. But someone who has a lot of purchased movies and is hoping to AirPlay them via 3rd part app on the FTV, may be disappointed.

    Re: Cutting the cord....

Forgive me for not reading through all posts. I am considering dropping charter myself.

Anyone here recommend an OTA HD antenna? I did a quick search and seems tough to decide. Looks like they all serve a little bit of a different purpose as far as channels and directions. I don't have a particular station I am looking to get but would rather something omnidirectional? to get as many channels as I can.

I can vouch for earlier statements that the lack of knowledge and all the choice has also prolonged me cutting the cord.

Currently have an apple tv and nextflix.

It depends on where you are. I live in central CT and can pick up Springfield and Hartford channels with an indoor antenna. I could also pick up New Haven and further with a exterior antenna. If you're in Worcester, a roof mounted antenna would probably pick up Springfield, Boston and maybe even Hartford channels. Inside, I'm not sure, maybe just the local Worcester channels and possibly Springfield. The indoor ones cost about $30-$50. Not sure what the exterior ones cost. Probably in the hundreds.

The only channels you'll get in each market are the usual 3 letter stations like Fox, ABC, NBC and CBS.

The prices for indoor antennas start below $10, and for outdoor antennas about double that. When I did my unscientific testing, the $8 indoor antenna got better reception than the $30 indoor antenna.

    Re: Cutting the cord....

Yesterday I skipped the whole telephone game about cutting the cord and just brought my cable box over to my local Comcast service center to drop it off. Plenty of others doing the same there...

Felt pretty good! Dropped the cable package (kept just the local network stations for 10 bucks a month, which lowered my internet price 15 a month!) and dropped the damn land line phone that's been ringing at least three times a day with telemarketers even though we were on the federal no call list. Bill went from 206 a month to 88 a month and took 15 minutes at the service center, including taking a number and waiting.

My tv is a pretty old Sony projection tv that still works well. I have an Apple TV box and a roku that I messed with before but I remember some problems with my old tv communicating with them. Might spring for a newer tv I guess with all my "savings"...planning to sign up for Netflix again and who knows what else.

Farewell to the Bruins, I was especially enjoying watching Frank Vatrano

Feels a little disingenuous to call it 'jailbreaking'. I don't think the Amazon devices are jailed. They come with Amazon's firmware as the operating system. Someone is following the instructions to wipe that, and install Kodi over it. Interesting little side business. The catch is installing Kodi over the existing firmware means that when new Kodi updates come out, you'll be on your own to install them. So you'll have two options: Find new pre-flashed device on ebay, or follow internet instructions.

All that aside, what are you trying to get by using Kodi that Amazon Fire's OS won't give you? And is it worth the trade-off of non-factory OS? Because tinkering usually increases the odds of bugs. I'm not trying to be a geek-snob or look down on someone for a lack of technical experience. But if you aren't technical enough to DIY the Kodi install, are you technical enough to benefit from Kodi?

    Re: Cutting the cord....

Be careful when you cut the cord. I also dropped off my box and Time Warner charged me in full for 2 more months! First time, I called and was nice, but told them I would be out of the country for my next billing cycle and to make sure it doesn't happen again. AND it did. I was pissed. I called them thieves, but I swear they do this to people purposely who aren't good about checking their statements. That was 2+ years ago and still makes me so mad!

    Anyone else doing that?

I'd be "starting from scratch" here... Only have Netflix. Would probably want a roku, apple TV, maybe HD antennas, blah blah blah.
Dude - I dropped cable 2yrs ago - epic reason to pick up a playstation (wife approved) then picked up hulu and netflix. I ended up saving 100 bucks a month and have better shows. F cable bro.

If you want that, do what I did... Buy a fire stick from amazon for way less & side load kodi yourself. I have a fully functioning fire stick w/ kodi software as an app.

so my wife and i are trying to cut down from a bundle to internet only...i installed a hd antenna, and plan to stream everything else through firestick with kodi/playstation vue/amazon/netflix...we called in this evening to cut it down to internet only after connecting all the equipment the way it should be...i verified that everything works...we call in and talk to comcast rep...account is in my name but wife is on it as well...wife says she wants to cancel service and sign up for a new account under her name...comcast says that's fine but you have to return the equipment and get new equipment under her name before she can connect under her name...wife explains to them that we have our own modems but we rent the cable boxes so we don't need any additional equipment...she says that we couldn't reconnect with any of the modems that were owned by me and we would need new modems as well...anyone else run into this?

Have no experience, but what model modem?

I and someone else I know have been notified that our personally owned modem is old, and needs to be replaced. Problem is the model we have is still listed on their compatibility site. I went in circles with a rep on the phone. She'd say I'd need to pick from the list, I'd say what I have is on the list. She'd say right, but it's old, pick something from the list. Round and round. I think at a point she either got sick of me, or was trying to indirectly acknowledge it was fucked without being on the record. My initial reaction is that it's a game to convince me to rent from them, but I thought that seemed impressively devious. Found out a friend had the same experience. He's playing wait-n-see so I figured I wasn't crazy to do the same.

If the modem is not listed on their site, I believe they cannot provision it. I'm under the impression there is basically a drop-down list on their computer. If it's not on the list, they can't do it. If there's any truth to what I described above, maybe our modems are at a legacy support stage and they won't provision any more? But that would mean what they show on their list is basically incorrect.

That's the beauty of regional monopolies/franchising, they don't have to give a fuck if there's no other option. Thankfully Time Warner doesn't pull this shit...yet.

My recommendation is to buy an Arris/Motorola SB6141 on Amazon. If they refuse to budge on the supported modem list, at least stick it to em and buy an "officially supported" one by flagrantly not renting. It'll pay for itself in 10 months anyways, and you'll never need a new one (DOCSIS 3.0 supports speeds far greater than we'll ever see around here in New England).

Comcast also has incorrect data about the capabilities of the modems they support. When they bumped up our speed to 200Mbit, I started getting emails that my modem was incompatible with those speeds and I needed to upgrade. I run an Arris TM822G which is good to about 300Mbit and change and my speed tests confirm everything is fine on my end with a download speed around 230Mbit.
