The IT/Data Center guys will get a chuckle out of this

Someone forwarded this to me....I don't know where it happened but I thought it was pretty funny.

From: The user who for whatever reason came in on Monday when no one else was in the
    building.

    To: IT Dept.
    Re: A/C constantly running.

    Hi Guys,

I came in today (Monday) to finish up a project I was working on before our big
meeting with a potential client tomorrow, and I noticed that there were three or
four large air conditioners running the entire time I was here. Since it's a
three day weekend, and no one is around, why do we need to have the A/C running
24/7? With all the power that all those big computers in that room use, I doubt
it is really eco-friendly to run those big units at the same time. And all
computers have cooling fans anyway, so why put the A/C for the building in that
room? I got a keycard from the facilities manager's desk and shut off the A/C
units. I'm sure you guys can deal with it being warm for an hour or two when you
come in tomorrow morning. In the future, let's try to be a little more
conscientious of our energy usage. Thanks.

    RESULT:

Fatalities: Exchange Server, Domain Controllers, a few Sun boxes that I'm not
    sure of the usage.

    Near-Fatalities: Phone Switch, Apps Servers.

Temperature of server room 7AM Tuesday Morning: 90 Degrees Fahrenheit.

Status of Employee who sent the above e-mail: Terminated.

I walked onto the 40,000sq' IDC floor at the ATT I worked at and noticed it felt a bit funny. Sure enough the HVAC guys were doing some routine maintenance and forgot to turn back on about 1/3 the crack units. I immediately called the head engineer from down stairs and when he got up there it was about 78 as opposed to the normal 68

What kind of server doesn't have an automatic thermal shutdown?

    Hell, my desktop has that.

    HA!

when i was in NC one of our customers nightly backups failed everynight at around the same time...30min difference...all error codes pointing to power failure, bad powersupply, power loss etc...but then it would come back up without any issues....this went on for about a month before they made someone sit in the data center all night to see what was going on....

sure enough, right around the time of failure...in walks the cleaning lady...the tape library ran 110 out of a normal wall socket...turned out she unplugged it to vacum then plugged it back in.....

she only got a firm talking to

You wouldn't believe how common that is. Why I've heard that story from at least ten different people in my short career.

    Fucking cleaning ladies.

This is frigin halarious, I can't believe they even got into the data center in the first place to shut down the AC's. Do they just let any ass in their data center to go unplugging stuff, and turning off ACs? Usually only people who are allowed in the DC get access, not these dumbasses who turn off ACs and plug in vacuum cleaners.

I once worked in a 9 story building near Boston that was almost completely heated by all the computer equipment in the Winter.

i was working in one of AT&Ts underground switches one day in the middle of February. one of the switch techs was telling me they had absolutely nothing for HVAC. instead they had a 20ft wide shaft that went 80 ft down (the depth of the building) and they just controlled how open the vents were in order to heat & cool the facility.

We did not turn on the heat last year. One 25U rack keeps the place livable (in the winter anyway) and ONLY draws about 8 amps at idle.

    yup

our equipment goes thorugh environmental testing, the heat room is between 100-125F and heated solely by the gear in the room...they still have to pump a/c in there to regulate

A smaller version of this was a consideration at my facility for the U.P.S. room, beause the HVAC was too far away??? how do Arcitechts and engineers design a building and HVAC system and not consider this stuff???

i just stood up and told the guy next to me but he doesn't know who you are. your AM should be able to get you off the mailing list. The catalog also only has List prices in it, your AM can discount accordingly.

I am just not going to rag on some of the clients that we have heard some interesting stories from. You never know when one of them is listening to get offended.

I work on long-haul DWDM telecom systems that generate a lot of heat. We had a customer testing a fully loaded system in a temp/humidity chamber in Texas. At the end of a week's worth of testing they left the equipment running but shut down the chamber to save electricity. What they never noticed was that even when they were running the equipment through a heat cycle, the chamber actually had to still run in AC mode because our gear pumping 1.6 Terabits per second makes a huge amount of heat. When they came in on Monday, the chamber was at 170 F and the plastic face plates on all the circuit packs had melted off. They ruined about $2 million worth of gear. Sadly, they did it again to the replacement equipment a few months later.
