is there a less gruesome option here? fuck me...
Sounds to me like you already have the solution; you just need to let it operate. Don't take the mouse away from the kitten.

    Put that kitty to work!
Let me rephrase the entire question...

I am aware multiple traps exist.

My question isnt even about mouse traps.

My question is, what is the best way to kill a live mouse in your possession? I've been stomping them, but I recently had one "pop" and it was fucked up.

edit: and we got the cat cause one of our two cats died and the other (weeble) is crippled and mildly retarded, im stoked the kitten has proven itself to be a killing machine. Mouse presence in the main part of the house has dropped significantly due to her.

Shovel to dispatch them. Cut the little head off then use shovel to flick it away

Would suggesting the garbage disposal sound cruel? BTW, my electric "rat zapper" traps work best with fresh lithium batteries. Regular Nicads die too quick. If in the garage or barn I'd 2nd the roll/bucket option with a bit of salt in it to keep it from freezing. Don't need too much water in it. Just enough so they can't touch the bottom. Even if it freezes and one gets out it'll be back.

With only a couple inches of water in the bucket and it froze: would they eventually freeze/starve or even eat each other? Seems like it would still be effective either way. You could also pour in a fresh few inches of water and drown them if they really started to accumulate.

Could you use RV antifreeze? -20° F is possible at Sunapee, below zero pretty common. Salt won’t cut it: ocean water freezes around 27-28.

The way that they kill mice in labs is to break the neck. Push up on the base of the skull or hold the head and pull down on the spine. No muss no fuss.

Re: Best way to dispatch mice?

For killing live mice, I've got two methods...

Use another snap trap and basically just push the mouse into the trigger. I've done this a few times with great success. No mess at all.

If the above won't work - this may sound awful - but put a mallet in a plastic bag and give the mouse a good whack on the head. Kills them instantly without making too much of a mess. Just don't go all Thor on them.

Re: Best way to dispatch mice?

If the mice are getting in the house, you’re on a non stop path of fighting mice every year. Why not just avoid fussing with a bunch of traps, and spend some time to figure out their points of entry, and blocking it off?
My house is 200 years old and I caught 20 mice the first week I moved in, I spent a weekend sealing gaps between the stone foundation and sills, and haven’t had mice since.

    +1 on walking the plank!

i set this up at the cabin as we are only up there once a month. the water contains the odor and all you do is just heave out the contents.
