You may want to watch this issue:

Possible ball joint failure leading to front wheel separation

Sounds like there may be a recall coming..

    It's about time!

Those things are garbage, they frequently fail after as little as 20k-miles. Then they replace them with the same POS bj's, which fail again in another 20k. And you have to fight the dealer to get them to replaced under warrenty.

I'm starting to belive there aren't any good suv's out there. They don't have good enough suspension for true off road, and they don't handle anything near a real car....Oh and my fn ford says, 'do not use high performance tires, as handling will be directly effected and may cause damage'

Toyota 4 Runner. Nissan Pathfinder. Both good SUV's.

The Toyota is based on a Tacoma.

I personally know one person who has had a front wheel fall off of their Dodge Ram. I know two other people who have had the front stabilizer bars go every 40k miles. And then I saw another RAM on my way to work with it's front wheel broken off on the side of the Mass Pike.

No thanks. I don't care if it's got a Hemi.

This was a major new story on the front page of CNN... I wasn't exactly digging...

Hell I own a ford... my car has had recalls too. Of course the nice side about Ford's horrible scandal with the Firestone tires is they are recall and TSB happy now. Everytime anything is remotely wrong with the car they are issuing notices and extending the warranty.. they don't cover anything up, they just immediately send a notice and tell you they are extending the warranty on that part.

Dodge claims there is no problem, better keep investigating. Like Ben said at least Ford recalls any problems. Dodge seems to think its cheaper to deal with repairs of faulty parts and hope the warrenty runs out so the customer has to foot the bill eventually.

I can vouch for the front suspension (not just the ball joints) being absolute shit on the Dakota/Durango. I've had tie-rods, ball joints....better yet the whole upper control arm replaced. Fortunately most under warranty. Perhaps some day Dodge will include zerk fittings so that the piece can be lubed. Why you would have fittings for the lower joint and tie-rods yet not the upper joint is beyond me. They actually think a pressed-in, sealed unit is gonna last in a truck. The other problem is the consumer...demanding trucks that ride like cars. I for one would be completely happy with a heavy duty suspension and sacrifice the ride. I didn't buy a truk expecting it to ride like a Caddy. Funny thing is, I think my '99 is not covered under the recall.

GM tried the press fit ball joints with no greese fittings from 88-90 in their light trucks. It didn't take long to realize that doesn't work, i don't remember there being ball joint failures like the dodges are having but they did make a loud squeeking noise.
