    donating a vehicle

I want to donate the '91 ranger. Anyone have any charities to suggest?

a friend recommended recycle for gold to aid the special olympics:

    Recycle for Gold: Tax Questions

seems like the law since 2005 is that anything above $500 will be a writeoff of what gross profits the charity receives

    donating a vehicle

But seriously XR80guy, when it comes to vehicles there are two types of charitable donations:
    1. Intended purpose: You donate the vehicle to a charitable organization and they use the vehicle to carry out the everyday activities of the organization. You can deduct the fair market value of the vehicle.
    2. Resale: The charitable organization sells the vehicle to get cash for the organization. You can only deduct the amount that the organization receives, and the organization will provide you with a Form 1098-C certifying that amount.

Either way, your only benefit is an itemized deduction i.e - a tax savings of 10-35% of the deductible value of the vehicle (depending on what tax bracket you're in).

If you're really just looking for a tax deduction, check out http://www.goodnewsgarage.org/

I know this thread is 10 years old, but whatever.

I need to get rid of the old Subaru Outback and it's not worth selling on CL. Anyone used a donation service recently? I listen to WERS Radio, and they have a program, so if there's nothing else worthwhile then I could throw it to them...

We used the ASPCA vehicle program. Took the 500 write off and called it good. We just wanted it gone.

I donated to NH NPR through cartalk.com recently. Was really easy and quick. Car sold for less than $500 at auction so they recommended that I take a $500 deduction. I probably could have sold it for 300 (it ran and drove but needed a lot of work to pass inspection), but this was just easy.

    Re: donating a vehicle

what is the deal with donating a vehicle, how much can you claim ?

thinking of donating my '96 Grand Cherokee Orvis Edition, NADA has high retail at $8400, average $5525, low $ 3150

needs rockers to pass inspection, otherwise in good shape for a 22 year old vehicle

    Party is over

I believe there is NO Federal tax deduction for charitable donations anymore

I fear for a lot of small charities , find some poor single mom and give her a good running car

I'd rather just give it to some one who really needs it , anyone know of a local veterans charity who would give this to a Vet from NE?

find someone local truly in need and give it to them.

get in touch with your towns veterans service officer (every town should have one)

someone told me about a local veteran in need last week and where giving him a van (hopefully this week).

if you have no luck and its road worthy i'll find it a home.
