    Door hinge hardware

    Have a door....

    Need to change hinges...

Bought new hinges (with the same number of holes)

The hole patterns don't quite line up.

    Return & buy new hinges?

    Or drill new holes?

Return and buy new if you can easily find ones that line up instead.

If for some reason you have an odd pattern that nothing lines up to, drill new holes but that's not recommended. Presuming new holes will be very close to old holes and their integrity will be sacrificed by proximity.

This time around take the old hardware with you when returning to match up easily.

Couple of options, I'm actually doing this today. Honestly, even if you hit the same holes the woods already chewed up a bit and you may just be fucking the holes up by reinstalling short screws.

    1. Get long screws to hopefully grab the stud behind the frame. Pre drill before doing that.

    2. Buy 5/16th dowel, cut into 2-3 inch lengths, drill 5/16ths hole where the screw holes are, wood glue the dowels, hammer them in flush, wait for it to dry, pre drill holes where need be, screw in long screws.

I'm doing number 2 up at the cabin and it works great.

True story. How half the light fixtures in my house became “brushed nickel”.

There's probably a dozen different sizes, shapes and styles of door hinges. Take one off and bring it in to home Depot or Lowe's and match it up.

    Re: Door hinge hardware

My hinge tip that I learned a month ago. I had a friend at my house who is a builder. All the outside doors of my 15 year old house were starting to become tough to open. The top corner was rubbing against the door frame casing. He said that is a common issue. The door frame was (very slightly) becoming a parallelogram instead of a rectangle. He removed the top screw on the top hinge and put in a long 4" screw, which reached into the wall stud. Which squared up the door frame just a tiny bit. But what a difference ! A simple but effective fix.

Another fix for misaligned doors are to pull the pin on the bottom and top hinge and bend the middle hinge then bend the fingers on the wall side of the top and bottom hinge with chanel locks to get them aligned.

That “should” be standard installation practice when installing a new door.. actually there should be 1 long screw in each hinge.

    Re: Door hinge hardware

I had a hinge not line up like that... I filled em up with wood putty, drilled new pilot holes an knowing I had extra studs behind the door frame, used longer 6" screws, that was 30 or more years ago, the door still opens and closes. fwiw, the hinges I used on that particular door were heavy spring loaded hinges that automatically close the door, so nobody gets yelled at, "do ya live in a barn"

I prefer to use an 8” screw when I’m drilling. Anyhow.

Pete. This could have gone in your FRIKKEN HOMEOWNER thread without creating another. You’re a mod, be better.

Take a hinge to the store and try to match up as close as possible.

If using the old holes…. grab some wooden toothpicks and wood glue. A little glue in the hole and shove a couple toothpicks in there. Install screw. That’ll give it some extra bite.

    Re: Door hinge hardware

I thought we were doing the thing where the screw gets bigger. First it was 4” screws, then 6”, then someone was filling the hole with wood glue which was a bit weird because sticky isn’t so bad but too sticky and questions need to be answered.

We can agree on that and also feel we should agree on my original point:

Pete was a dick for making this thread. Original house thread would have served fine.

That got lost in the whole screw size debate. My entire point of that post was that Pete is a dick.
