I drove from Santa Monica to Boston in 60 hours once. I went the southern route (RT40 and turned left around Tennesee'ish). Up through PA dutch country and across. The first time I stopped from Leaving LA was in PA.

you'll probably wanna go the southern route, then...

head down to 40 and turn right. it'll take you right past my crib. elevation is about 5K, but it's not steep going.

Ditto, no problems with the 95s to i40 route. And yes, you go straight through Alby queue-queue

looking at this website, it seems rt 40 goes right through CO and Utah where the rockies are, is there another way around or do i just follow 40 through?

also depends if you've got time to kill...

if yes: take a slow day through virginia and hit skyline drive/blue ridge parkway. absolutely gorgeous.

second time we went, we took 90W to ohio, then turned south through indianapolis, st. louis & hooked up w/ 40 in oklahoma.

has the added benefit of skipping arkansas, which is some of the nastiest, most depressing highway i've been on.

    NO SHIT!!!

Ba-bump-ba-bump-ba-bump-ba-bump, repeat as neccessary for about a day.

The highway is made up of concrete slabs with rubber expansion lines in between them. Tractor-trailers in Ark actually drive with the right 9 wheels on the shoulder so as to avoid setting up a harmonic reaction in the truck that can send the trailer hopping. It's BRUTAL.

i swear, as soon as we crossed the border from tennessee, the road got narrower, shittier, and the scenery turned bleak.

the next day was the first and only time i've been happy to be in texas.

I've driven across country a bunch of times. If you take I-80, expect a nice boring ride through Nebraska. I would stay clear of I-80 in the winter though. If enough snow falls, they will literally shut down the highway - with gates so that traffic cannot proceed. I-70 would be the way to go in January.
