    Driving in FLa.

The Wife and I plus the Cats left NH Friday after the storm to come down to Florida. Two days 14 hours 1st day 11 day two . Driving 95 is a adventure once we hit SC the road sucks concrete slabs are brutal after that if your not doing 80 your going to get run over. Once in Fla. it was faster must have been passed buy guys doing well over a 100 more then a dozen times and towing my race bike plus all the crap needed to live for 8 weeks down here it was I show.. Not complaining as we made good time just interesting.. Hope to do a track day at Jennings then hit Roebling Road on the way home. love being a old retried guy...

Florida, where Crown Victorias go to die.

We were coming back from a Sailing regatta, which also happened to be the weekend of the Daytona 500. NASCAR Team transporters passed us going way over 80 - probably 90+. Never seen trucks move so fast. I’m guessing not many southern highway patrol officers are going to stop a NASCAR Team....

The only time I use Rt95 is the winter and I try to go through NYC at 5am. In the summer I will take 84 to Scranton and 81 down to 77 or something like that. I hate 95. Pulling a trailer through southern CT and through the NYC into the northern NJ area is a white knuckle ride. I like to drive fast and being in sales I'm on the road a lot. But pulling a toy hauler on 95 through that stretch is just like Star Wars Meridian Trench Run. Stay on target... Stay on target... with cars passing on both sides being the Tie fighters.

Nice to hear I am not the only one who hates the SC to Georgia section of 95. I drove down to my parents place a two years ago, sat in traffic in DC for ages. Well past 12am when I was reaching S.C. That South of The Border was a fucking trip to come upon after driving for 16 hours. The amount of deer I saw grazing along the edges of the S.C. stretch of 95 was terrifying, that coupled with the loud hum of those concrete slabs made for some uncomfortable driving.

    Re: Driving in FLa.

When I went to school in Worc, I drove up and back to Fla about 4 times a year. Used to be able to do it straight through, too old to do that now. My sister was going to school in Erie at the time, I met up with her and we drove down together once, once. She wasn't as heavy footed as I, felt like we were going 50 most of the time. Then to top it off, she fell asleep in GA and drove right off the road in front of me. Nothing I could do, just sit there and watch her swamp her car. She was ok, car not so much.
I drove down to spring break once with two friends. Three of us in an Eagle Talon, one at 6-3, one at 6-5 and one at 5-9. One of them decided he would drive once we hit NC. I woke up in the passenger seat and we were doing 105mph. All I said was, "If you get pulled over, you're going to jail, and we don't have bail money." He said, "I'm not the fastest thing on the road." While I didn't believe that, I went back to sleep. We made good time.

The MF’ers in SC sit with radar in construction zones at 4am. Only by luck did we avoid getting nailed.

We were towing a 4,000# trailer and I started doing what the trucks do, 80-85 downhill and burn off speed uphill. Got noticeably better mpg.

I normally take 84 to 81 to head down south. But didn't want to do the hills in PA this time of year. I will say 81 is getting a lot of truck traffic and can be a bitch in its own right. Still a better drive then 95.. Took the The Tappen zee to the Garden state then to NJ turnpike. Had a pretty clean ride till DC. Will never live in a big Metro area what a mess..

Same way in Texas except your not on an interstate highway. My buddy got married at some place off a country road. The road we took to get there was a 70mph speed limit with left turn lanes and side streets. Nothing like pulling out from a stop and needing to hit 75 to keep up with traffic.

has anyone ever lived in the Palm coast/daytona beach area?

how does it compare to central MA and/or SoCal for living/jobs/family/schools?

how's the dirt bike riding/street bike riding like?

ugh...my parents are thinking about retiring in eastern FL and are trying to convince me as their dying wish that I get an arranged marriage to a stay-at-home wife from India & bear spawn to ensure the "Patel" last name doesn't go extinct, blah blah blah expire out the fun from life

    Re: Driving in FLa.

Imagine a heavy tourism area of the Cape in the summer, then add 20F and hurricanes. My parents lasted about 8 years in Fla, they now reside in Alabama after a short stint in SC.

I lived in Fla for a couple years in the 90's. It was hot, damned hot. There is plenty to do, most revolves around water. I didn't have a bike down there so I can't comment. But dirt bike riding I would assume would go to sand bike riding.

Arranged marriage?? I have a hard enough time staying sane with the one I picked...

Would have a hard time living down here full time, I am staying on the gulf coast near Tampa. Traffic is the Biggest problem. It should be 40 minutes to Tampa it has yet to take less then 1 1/2. Traffic chick on TV has a prime time slot. Didn't bring my street bike because of the this and the roads are boring! The good is Daytona, Homestead , Palm Beach and Jennings are all 4 -5 hour drives. Weather right now is good but the Summers are HOT... Thinking of checking out the Ashville NC area for full time retirement home? No comment on arranged Marriage. although I can see an upside?

Doing something like getting married just to appease your folks is a great way to spend the rest of your life resenting them AND your wife.

I had friends who lived in that area. Great nightlife, strip joints and golf.

    Terrible humidity and traffic.

Roads sucks for street riding. I suppose off roading in the swamps could be fun. But think more 4 wheels than 2. Water craft would really be the choice though.

Itís a completely different culture than New England. Think all big box stores. Strip malls. Chain stores and restaurants.

Florida has a ton of motocross, not so sure about trail riding. If I were moving there it would 100% be to commit to the beach lifestyle. I like the pan handle, you can still find waterfront there for short-ish money if you stay away from civilization. I hear arranged marriages are nice and I believe success rates are higher than western methods. Also, Indian women are fucking hot! Have any other prospects of beautiful women touching your penis?

And women never put on a “winter coat.”

My wife is from St Augustine. She goes back in November and April when the weather here sucks. And no other time.

The way I solved this problem was to tell my parents I was thinking about marrying a twice-divorced stripper with a kid from a previous marriage. They quickly changed tacks and suggested “Not rushing into anything” and didn’t mention the M word for at least two years.

Maine is so hot right now. Both literally, because it’s the summer, and in a more metaphorical sense, because Portland has become the new Portland, and food journalism is entering its hipster/nostalgia phase, in which it has become recently very cool to rediscover old places that have been doing the same damn thing forever. And outside of Portland, that is Maine. Mainers don’t give a damn about your trend forecasts, they’re just going to keep naming their children “Wade,” selling L.L.Bean backpacks to middle schoolers, using the term “down East” to mean South, and hilariously calling ham subs with American cheese “Italians.”

And we haven't even scratched the surface on its borderline monopoly on the high-end lobster supply, its delicious blueberries, or the fact that it has literally thousands of islands you don't even know about where dudes named Wade are probably eating lobsters and drinking Moxie as we speak.

yeah, that confirms what I expected - pretty different from MA and socal

for me (it's always relative, right?) at Palm Coast/Daytona Beach it seems great if you want retirement/small town feel, you pretty much stay in your house all day, low cost of living, quiet, less traffic than central/eastern MA, send your kids to private schools, and don't want to deal with the cold...but on the other hand hot/humid in the summer (8 month riding season anyways?), mosquitos, NO DIRT BIKE (trail) RIDING, no mountains, straight lines on the street, no lane splitting...pretty sure I'd hate it...but there are way worse things to hate

My ride-or-die moto buddy from Long Beach moved to the Miami area...and 2 years later he is even selling his bikes!!

He said riding in FL is so boring he’d rather not have bikes

I will stick to (bikes + SoCal) for now

    Re: Driving in FLa.

    belated post ...

i haven't lived down there in a long, long time (west of West Palm) but the off-road scene was awesome. used to do the FTR hare scramble circuit up and down the whole state. loved it.

looking at the current FTR schedule, there are 14 scrambles and 9 enduros so it still looks pretty active to me. we had sweet local riding as well, just gotta know the right people.

i only entered a handful of MX races back then but i know some of the tracks are still around ... although, SoCal it is not.
