Very cool. What effects were you using for the first one? Did you use a 'Helix'?

Anyone know if there are any rules governing drone flights at Palmer? I looked on the FAA map and it's all clear. Taking some drone shots of a track day would be kind of cool. Maybe I'll bring it (DJI Phantom 3 Advanced) and ask Tony.

Ducdave, I was just using the activetrack in the DJI software.

I just uploaded another small project from the weekend. I used Imovie on my iPad this time. I tried to use Davinci Resolve but my laptop isn't powerful enough to get it done.

    Re: Drone view

Just got a DJI Mavic Mini. This is an under 250 gram unit that avoids many of the regulations that larger drones face, such as FCC registration.

Only flown it briefly, but first impression is that it does everything the Phantom 3 Adv does. Haven’t tested range yet. Battery life does seem a bit shorter. More than made up for by the very compact size.

    Re: Drone view

Did more flying today. Summary is it does everything the Phantom 3 Adv. does. It’s a little less stable when hovering, but the software is simpler and the package is much more compact.

    Folded up:

Ready for flight, all it needs is to hook up the phone with the flight app.

We are right on the edge of the Logan Aiport control zone. By “right on the edge” I mean if I try to take off from the back yard I get a warning, but not from the back deck. I saw a message that altitude was limited to 60 meters (about 200 feet) in the zone but haven’t confirmed that. We were flying at 150-180’ to make sure we were over the trees.

Watched a YouTube video and the guy flew it out 18,090 feet (3.4 miles) and got back within 75 feet before the battery completely died. So a total of 36,100 feet and flight time of 24 minutes at a speed of 17mph, recording video the whole way.

    Video resolution is 2.7 K: 2720×1530 25/30 p or FHD: 1920×1080 25/30/50/60 p

For $400, easy-to-ise with good quality video and no FAA registration required unless being used commercially, this is a great choice. But I recommend spending the extra $100 for the “Fly More” bundle. I didn’t and regret it. That extra $100 gets you three batteries instead of one, a smart charging hub/carrier that will charger them in serial, three extra prop sets instead of one, a prop guard and a carry bag. Batteries are $45 each and the prop guard is $29, so you are way ahead. Just ordered a second battery but the only way to charge it is in the unit, so you can’t “hot swap.” When you are in the middle of photographing terrain, 20 minutes goes by pretty fast so you really need at least two.

Yea I honestly don’t know crap about drones. I been toying the idea for a couple of years. Bought a couple $20-100 toys and got rid of them all. I know I could use one sooner than later but don’t feel like paying $500+

    Re: Drone view

Flew it again today and got more info.

We wanted to photograph a boat in the water. Well within range of the house - except two big houses in the way so I lost signal and had to come back after a km. Never tried it with the Phantom.

DJI has greatly clarified the restrictions near airports etc. We are on the edge of an altitude restriction zone of 150 meters - 492 feet. Because of image size and concern about winds, seldom fly above 200 or 250 feet so NBFD. There is another zone restricted to 60m, then as you get closer it’s a “No Fly” and the drone won’t take off.

The B4UFLY app remains pretty much worthless.

If you want to fly in areas like yours, you can get an original DJI Mavic and hack it easy enough.

This thing does everything we need and is really compact. Going to get rid of the Phantom.

Pretty happy with the Mavic Mini: it’s so convenient we use it a lot more. Took it out of my bag, plugged in the phone to the controller, did a software upgrade and took a ride on the edge of a snow squall.

My marina slip neighbor has an older DJI and it's impressed me enough to make me plan to buy a new one for myself. Was thinking the Mavic 2 zoom might be cool. Any reason to pass on that one?

The Mavic 2 zoom is very nice, but the non zoom model has a much better camera. But honestly, any of the Mavic drones are really nice and do way more than we really need. And there are plenty of them available used for a better deal.

These are the marina where we keep our boat in Hampton Beach

    Drone view-6-jpg
This is our boat anchored in Casco Bay, ME last August. Shortly after flying the drone around the island, a couple of guys took a small boat from the island out to our boat. We thought they might be angry about the drone or where we anchored, but they were just curious about the drone. I ended up emailing all the photos and videos to the older one of them and he was so thrilled with them that we now have a standing invitation to visit his family's multi-generational island camp any time.

I lugged my 550mm hexacopter far out to camp accessible only by snowmobile (it was not easy), then it was so friggen cold it wouldnt fly. Such a waste of time and effort. I can definitely see the convenience of a portable drone.
