    Re: educate me 401-k

Not wanting to be underwater again.

Also, the possibility of going to a single income household while our kid is still in her younger years. With no mortgage to pay, either I, or my wife, won't have to work anymore. If it's me not working, I could pick up contract gigs during the school year for extra fun money and all three of us could do whatever we wanted all summer long since she's a teacher.

Once again, the cost of freedom was a large consideration.

If you can pull that off, it would be worth it. My father did that when I was younger and we traveled the entire country, canada and mexico. Best gift he ever gave us.

I refid to a 13.5 year because of the difference in interest rates. Looking back on it now not sure it was worth it instead of refinancing to a 30 with a higher rate. Meh hindsight is 20/20.

Sure, safe, defined amount saved vs "potential" depending on market rate of return. It's less risk, but less potential of return. That's all.

Yeah, so you're two and a half years away from being able to SLASH your expenses and thus required stash to live. Another reason why it's ludicrous to consider your income when figuring a target nest-egg.

I guess that's an argument for including your net home value. I've got like 10-12 left on mine, plus/minus the roof I'm about to finance in. So you are way ahead of me there.

So, I'm in Moab, UT this week. We were at Arches the other day, Canyon Lands. (4 year old of the house keeps calling it 'candylands') Hitting up Zion and a few others before flying back to reality. Walking around a National Park drives home how much I want to do this as well.

In related news, move west. Seriously, just do it. It's amazeballs out here and everything is so cheap. Nothing rusts out. So bizarre. There are 1st gen tacomas everywhere.

And you people with the adventure vans. Get out here. Your people are here.. en masse!

    Yeah yeah yeah. #vanlife
I wonder how their 401k's are doing..

The vans are everywhere out here though. Everything from old shitbox E150's with "custom" hippie paint to luxed out sportsmobile builds on 4x4 Sprinters. Refreshing to see lots of them instead of the massive class-As. Although it's still early in the season I guess. Or maybe we're just looking in all the wrong places.

I did a lot of research and spoke to people we know there, and it seems the general opinion is that unless you're Mormon, Utah is not an entirely comfortable place to live. It's too bad, because I love vacationing out there. We've just started a tour of potential retirement spots - Ashville was first. We're headed to Fort Collins / Boulder / Golden in June.

Same thing in parts of Idaho. Sister wives...

Two weeks ago I spent the week in Phoenix/west valley area. Amazing spot.
Spent this past week in Atlanta/Alpharetta. Loads of money and opportunity, but attitudes there suck almost as bad as New England. Fuck that.
