    New question:
I have two “extra” accounts with fidelity from previous employers that remain unmanaged for some time now.
I just realized I can roll them over.
Am I better off to roll them over with my current employer or to an IRA (that I have no clue how to manage)

    Re: educate me 401-k

There are pros and cons to everything.

I just clicked through a few google hits. This seems like a reasonable rundown.

A third option is if you have a 401k through your current employer it may allow "roll-ins". Mine did and I took advantage. Simplifies my management while still keeping most everything protected in a 401k vs an IRA. One gotcha was that when I rolled-in the offerings in the 401k were awesome. They then changed the offerings to less awesome, forced everyone out of the funds I liked. Naturally there are no "in service" withdrawals allowed. So I can quit or live with it. Fortunately they replaced the offerings with half decent ones after about a year of being screamed at by 50k employees.

No real clear "best" answer on this one IMO.

What about contributing your bonus to your 401k to get around the massive bonus tax?

I don't get a bonus but my friend brought it up and I thought it was an interesting strategy.

My guess is that the bonus could only be contributed if there was room under the employee’s contribution captor that year.

The bonus could not be an “employer-match” because then it would be subject to ERISA and they would hav ego do it for everyone.

    Re: educate me 401-k

Bonus counts under the same cap as regular contributions.

A bonus is part of my package. I usually plan my contributions schedule such that I hit my 401k very hard when the bonus pays out. Takes X% right off the top and I never even "see" it. Minimal impact on my regular checks and monthly budget.
I usually get about 20% of my annual save in that one check. It's great.

But there's nothing special about it. It's still a regular contribution.

I have my normal contribution percentage withheld from my bonus and the remaining I have tax withheld flat at Fed 22% (used to be 25% under old tax laws).

I'm not guaranteed a bonus but I'm fortunate enough to have received them many times over the years. On the tax front, my company treats them like any other paycheck taking out all the usual withholdings. When it comes to voluntary withholdings, they take out my normal 401K percentage and also provide the company match but I don't have any of my other voluntary benefits withheld since they are accounted for in my normal 26 paycheck schedule.

I'm too lazy to RTFM. What are they doing for you?? Is this another robo-investing outfit like Wealthfront, Betterment, etc?

I've been using it for a few years now. Not as part of any real investment strategy though. I throw $20/wk plus round ups on all my cards into it and don't track the balance. It works out to something like $180/mo and I just use it as a "Ryan wants to blow some money on something dumb" account. It paid for our last trip to Vegas/Zion a couple weeks ago. The account overall is up something like 6% since I opened it though.

Overall... yea it's just another robo-investment account.

Yup. Basically. Except they allow you to automatically invest "spare change". They'll round your credit card transactions up to the next dollar and deposit the amount rounded up into your account.

    Re: educate me 401-k

Weird. Not for me. But.. sure, why not.

I think I'm a bigger believer in the "pay yourself first" strategy. I have fixed savings withdrawals that come out on the 5th and 25th. I treat those like bills: scheduled as part of the budget and not paying them is not an option. Automatic transaction scheduling is a big help here.
I also have payroll withdrawals (401k, HSA, employee stock purchase, etc).

Everyone's different. Whatever works for you.

Where do they take their cut? I'm assuming it's not a free service?

Page sav linked says they charge. Fee is low though; $1-3/mo depending on bells and whistles.

I assume they also skim by working the float like Betterment, Robinhood, Square's Cash-app and the rest.

Never been a fan of the transactional round-up saving and/or investing apps. I'm with Bubs where I have automated transfers occurring every Friday.

For those that "need" or benefit from the spare change approach (micro investing) I'm assuming would have a high APR on their credit cards. Would be interesting to see what their true total return is on their portfolio when factoring full cost.

I finally have enough money in a vanguard account to invest in the big boy stuff.

What are y'all invested in at vanguard? I'm thinking VO or VTV currently...

VTSAX/VTSMX is my bread and butter.

Not that it helps you now. But Fidelity is kicking ass and taking names with their new zero minimum stuff. My position automatically converted to FSKAX.. which is $0 min and 0.015 exp ratio!!

Dang that isn't an option for me in Fidelity. I'm currently in FXAIX there. That's an awesome expense ratio though!

It may not make much sense but I'm trying to avoid anything with crapple.

I think I meant fzrox. I'm now looking at my own poop wondering why I'm in fskax and not fzrox?!

I was in something else, a different 'total market' whatever with uber low ER. There was some mail re: them moving things, changing fund names. I assumed I was being moved into one of the zero funds. But now see I'm not in any of them.

Clearly I'm on top of this poop!

No. That doesn't make any sense to me.
