    Large Explosion at my work!

So there was an extremely large Explosion at my company during second shift when there are a limited amount of workers. Thankfully nobody was injured besides temporary loss of hearing.

Details are still being investigated, but up to this point we know:
During a Nuematic test ( Air Pressure test ) A termintaion cap blew off the pipe and impacted a few other preassembled pipes awaiting final welding parts. Pressure we test this class "BUS" is 106psi. Pipe is 30inch in diamater and 35 feet long. Engineers estimated the pressure of which this pipe blew off had 78,000 pounds of force behind it!!!

A former marine works in this department and said the explosion was as loud as a military missle launcher going off within 20 feet of it, or at least it seemed that loud !

The cap flew 20-25 yards about 3-5 feet off the ground and impacted another section of pipe and took that pipe and the one stacked behind it for one hell of a ride! The section that took the impact was moved about 15 yards where it colided with a pipe roller table, the other pipe got shot back and took out other preassembled pipes and stopped about 25 yards away from impact. After the cap impacted the pipes it flew straight up into the air and landed in the cement denting the floor after also traveling another 15 yards. A vacuum was created during the event that ripped up a section of aluminum floor paneling and sending it aross the shop like a kite, other debre and parts from the pipe being tested that blew out were found as far away as 80 yards from the explosion.
We are still trying to repair the test set that was severly damaged from the recoil effect on the set. All the solid supports and anchor were busted out of the concreet floor, the entire test unit was shifted. internal damage was repaired, but we are unsure if there may be more iternal damage we do not know about..

Total cost of repairs and loss of production testing time is estimated around $200,000. If more damage, & we have more down time the cost will escilate.

Overall cost is nothing compaired to how lucky we are not to have had a death. I can not believe that not one person was injured. We are very lucky!

This is just one photo of one of the damaged pipes. This is a piece made for part of the Three Gorges Dam project in China which will be a power generation plant supplying the 2008 Olympics restructuring project in the works now. This pipe would have been part of a supply line carrying 800Kv of power. (800,000 volts).

It looks like an spark gap used to prevent excessively high voltages in a system. It pretty much prevents a charged device from arcing back to itself which could damage it.

May I ask what type of company you work at? Like do you only deal with engineering and such? That must have been a horrendous sound to hear!
