Feedback on 3 row SUV options...

I've been following the crossover thread and the ridgeline thread, figured it is time to start my own thread. I'm looking to sell my sedan at some point and buy an SUV. I drive my car <10 miles per day, so I don't care that much about mpg and want the passenger/cargo/tow capacity of a bigger suv. Also, I'm a cheapskate so I'm looking at something newer than 2010 but under around 15k. The leading contender in my head right now is a ~2015 mazda cx-9, but I really just want something that is reliable and comfortable.

I suggest the Chevy traverse/gmc Acadia. I know a few people with them who like them, but what really has me sold is I’m 6’4”, sat in the third row with another kid my height, and we were perfectly comfortable. Something I can’t say about the Explorer for example.

I found a few chevys in your year and price range with under 100k, if you can seek out a loaded Acadia with second row captains chairs I think they are really sweet... for a GM.

Or a second generation Honda Pilot?

Don't laugh, but Buick Enclaves are pretty damn nice. And they're generally owned by old people* (who take care of them), and they depreciate pretty badly so they're inexpensive.

    * Sightings of our very own Garandman in a beige Enclave cannot be confirmed or denied.

Re: Feedback on 3 row SUV options...

I have a '12 Armada, bought it with 5k on the clock, has just over 90k on it now. It's been really pretty good as far as reliability goes. Everything I've done to it beyond basic maintenance and wear items:
    -Heater control valve ($90)
-New exhaust pipe (rusted out at the flange) ($300)
    -front tie rod ($75)

It's been my wife's daily up until this point, she now drives a smaller car and we keep the Armada for traveling as it is roomy and nice inside. When we bought it, it replaced an '04 Eddie Bauer Expedition that we bought new. We traded it at 8 yrs old and 80k miles, again my wife's daily. That thing was a steaming heap (I could write a dissertation on how bad that vehicle was). But at 90k and going on 7 years old (and this one's had to deal with a large teenage passenger) this truck has held up great, virtually new inside yet. I know many don't like Nissans for whatever reason, and it isn't the most attractive SUV, but it's been great to us. You can get them for a song now that the new models are out. But you really need to have a big SUV to justify this truck, it is large, and loves gas.

Your price range will be the limiting factor. There have already been some good suggestions. Stay clear of the Explorer and add the Dodge Durango to your list of considerations.

2011 - 2012 Kia Sorento w/ the V6 will give you the 3rd row and the towing you are looking for. $10K +/- now as well. My 2011 is at 145K miles now and have had no issues at all.

I've been fairly unimpressed by my current kia forte - for example, the trunk leaks. Not sure I want to roll the die on another kia.

    Whats wrong with the explorer?

My wife drives a '16 twin turbo explorer sport with the third row and the thing is amazing.

How much are you looking to tow?

That's going to open or close a lot of options spoken here.

I have no trailer currently, and I'm unlikely to ever have much more than a cheap folding one a la harbor freight. My guess is that any of the 3 row SUVs will have enough towing capability for my potential hypothetical purposes (grabbing a riding lawnmower, towing a motorcycle). Probably even many of the smaller SUVs would. I want the three row more for the ability to fold the back seat down for more space or cram more kids in the back if necessary (surrogate minivan duty if our minivan is down).

I'd go with a bigger midsize then, Highlander, Pilot, CX-9, etc. The bigger body on frame SUVs will tow 8k plus, but at a heavy duty vehicle penalty (gas, maintenance, tires, etc).

Pilot is a solid choice then.

Re: Feedback on 3 row SUV options...

Subscribed as we may go three row Crossover next, requirements are decent performance and handling, real AWD system and no CVT.

No love for Ford Explorer or Flex?

At ski areas the Acadia and Pilot are most popular. Highlander is in that class but 3rd row is tight.

We have a 2016 Tahoe due to towing requirements, and rented a Sequoia for a week before buying the Tahoe. Their space utilization is poor compared to Crossovers, as is ride, handling, and mpg. They can be expensive to buy although older versions are plentiful. Unless you tow over 5K they are hard to justify.

Your car would probably be good for the tow duty you described. Space is the real issue for you, not really much else.

CX-9 would be my vote as best all around.

Confirmation bias has me liking this response, lol. The chevy traverse/gmc acadia/buick enclave are all on my radar now as possibly good choices that I hadn't considered before.

For both the pilot and the grand cherokee, I don't like how they look and the price seems higher than the features compared to the above options.
