    I had a lot of extra work done, but for starters figure $2,000 for labor (remove, dissasemble, reassemble, reinstall), $1-2,000 for machine work, and $2,000 and up for parts.

    For example just the crank and forged pistons were $1,000: you might not need or want the hardened crank which was $300. Forged pistons are almost $700. The Killer B oil pan almost $500, windage tray $200, and STI oil cooler almost $300.

    I also had the alternator (just bad luck), fuel and oil pump replaced with new, all new hoses, new Group N engine mounts, etc. You could spend much less, or quite a bit more, depending on what you want to do.

    After talking with Jay at Wicked, I understand how he will end up quoting 5k for my particular build. He is accounting for the worst case scenario. Still, that's a hefty number that I might try working with them on to whittle away at.

    So, after meeting with Dana from CL I've decided to give him the work. For the money, I will get more out of him by comparison and he warrantees his work for 2 years. Looked over the agreement today and it's very reasonable.

    He owns the machine shop that inspects the critical components and has direct control over the rebuild process.

    He is not advertising services​ through the machine shop so "the shop" is Dana from CL.

    Not much longer now...

    Assemble intake​ manifold, route vacuum lines and install in the blue car then sell.

    Assemble engine, route....Uhhh.... everything.....and install in the white car then drive​.

    Interesting​ to see a VF40 in the 05 and a VF45 in the 08. Looking forward to having the build completed in the 08. Gonna have some nice hardware in there.

    White car is done, sans turbo.

    Since the VF45 currently installed is from China (and the seals were on their way out anyway), the builder and I elected to replace the turbo with a VF52 so I'll be acquiring one of those then making an appointment with Tuning Alliance for a base map. Depending on what TA suggests, after engine break-in the longer term plan right now is to add injectors, fuel pump, intercooler and some exhaust work then back to TA for final tune. All in all I'd be extremely pleased with 300 to the wheel but the order of priority is reliability then power so the final HP number ultimately is not all that important.


    The blue car is for sale if anyone is interested. 2005 Legacy GT Ltd Auto 153,xxx miles. It runs and drives however a vacuum nipple broke off the intake manifold so I purchased a replacement that still needs to be installed.

    So the builder I mentioned from CL? Yeah....about that.

    If you are reading this, DO NOT fuck with Subaru Specialists or anyone with the name Scott Dana Boyd.

    May 2017 I handed my car and a couple grand over to this fucker. Fast forward to last week and I now have a car that disappeared 4 months ago and not a goddamned thing was done to it....which is a blessing in disguise at this point.

    I had him sign something that states I receive and engine from him by Oct 1st or a full refund by Oct 8th. I fully expect to end up in court with this guy.....which is really too bad since he knows his shit, he just really sucks at organizing, planning and committing.

    Almost 14 years of using CL and this is the first raw deal so I guess it's not incredibly bad. Just sucks that I now have to do all the work I was trying to avoid in the first place.

    Thanks for the update, I was just thinking about bumping this thread to see how you made out and if you'd recommend the CL Suby guy for future work. Guess we have that answer now Sorry to hear about your shitty situation with this scammer, sucks when stuff like this happens.

    Seems like 75% of the time complicated auto stuff ends up going to shit, hate having to deal with anything beyond brakes/suspension/gaskets as so often unexpected/unexplained "complications" come up. I just went thru something similar with an independent mechanic who I had decent luck with previously but just got my car back after having him replace the timing chain tensioner. Went to pick it up and it was making a horrible whining noise, "WTF is this noise dude, sounds horrible??" He says, "Not sure what that is, since I wasn't able to start it before I started working on it I thought it was making that noise before, it's definitely not anything to do with the tensioner." Of course he has no idea what it might be and left on a 3 week vacation 2 days later

    Good luck with getting your $$$ back, hopefully he wants to avoid court/bad reviews, mans up and give you the $$$ without further action

    It will eventually shake out, it's just a matter of how and when. I have completely resigned to the fact that I will be in court soon. I'm certainly not losing sleep over this.


    The good news is my car wasn't messed with and I received the VF52 in the same box as when I left it. Even better than that, I brought it to a friend's shop to check things out and he said to just put it on the road until it dies. So, because this engine is going to pop some day (and at the risk of turning this into an oil thread), I was advised to change the oil and add Lucas Oil Stabilizer. It'll be a fun test to see how long it goes and me being me, oil additives in my mind are the antithesis of everything that is holy so why the hell not...?

    My 09 WRX with Stock injectors, turbo, intercooler and SPT cat-Back (and forged pistons) was 330 at the wheels. Is it a 2.0 or 2.5?

    300 to 330 I think, depending on the dyno. The motor was built at Wicked Performance then they sent me to a shop in Charlmont (?) for the Cobb tune.

    I focused on reliability/durability. STI Crank, forged pistons, better bearings, Killer B sump etc. Went to Exedy stage one clutch as well. Cost a lot but I’m keeping it for 4-5 more years, most likely.

    I can chime in to this for the P2 ("S60") platform/generation

    I have an 03 XC70, (2x) and 3x S60R's

    As others have said regular S60's have common problems in the early years with trannys and throttle body modules (also power steering reservoir) other than that, pretty bullet proof. You will often see these things with 200k miles plus for sale and people still asking decent money

    Very rust resilient, only car to date I've owned that I've never had to worry about rust while shopping or while owning it

    At 200k miles I have a bad oil leak that needs fixing and I'm just swapping the R motor/tranny into XC70

    As far as S60R's are concerned, you got a whole new set of problems.

    The "smart" 4C shocks unless recently replaced always go bad and are quite pricey. New around $250 a shock on sale, used around $100 each.

    For 06+ you get the better body style and interior but the automatic trannys always go. Both of mine have issues with the tranny solenoid right now. I'd pick a 6speed if you can find one.

    Radios often go bad too. Stock replacement is around $150.

    Some occasional electrical problems here and there, such as the alarm system being annoying and having the batteries corrode in it causing it to malfunction and needing to be replaced or simply pulled out if you dont mind living with the error message.

    They do move out of their own way and are pretty nice cars to have. Still look good, get half decent mileage, great Brembo brakes all the way around. I tow a 6x10 enclosed with 3 bikes in it with my XC70. Utility is definitely there.



    Personally I dont think its worse than any other car of the caliber (m3/Audi/Benz etc). These are a little more plain than their luxury counter parts but thats a good thing. Its more fun and nicer than comparable honda/toyota and definitely better than my experiences with Subarus especially for longevity.

    My Mom has a 2012 S80 with over 100k miles on it. It's been a great car, gets good fuel mileage and hasn't needed much for repairs.
