    Finally built a deck!

Got tired of moving the patio set around on the grass so the care taker could mow the lawn.
This project was a bit challenging for a few reasons. First, I donít attach decks to houses, I will only build free standing. In this case, the house is 200 years old and very low to the ground, so not much room to work with. Second, 200 year old house comes with a 200 year old stone foundation, which at the surface, looks pretty basic. However, dig down 18Ē and 2í away from the face of the foundation, and my deck footings are sitting on stones from the foundation, not upto code, but what can you do in this case.
Third issue was making the height work, and still have a strong deck. I set all the footings the same height, and used brackets that I set while the concrete was still wet to attach the beam to. Beams are 4x6 pt, joists are 2x8 pt and notched around the beam to save space. Because of the notch, I also had to joist hang each joist to the beam for added strength.

Decking, decided on Trex select. I had wood decking on my last house, Iím all set with using pt wood and dealing with the upkeep. Because of the trex decking, the framing of the deck is also 12Ē oc vs 16Ē oc. Decided on the Trex color matched screws to screw down the decking, just shy of 1,700 screws total.

After the decking was screwed, decided to cover up the ugly green pressure treated wood, with mahogany trim, painted to match the house trim.
Still needs another coat of white paint on the trim, and itíll be done.

Well, it's not the biggest deck I've ever seen, but it sure is one of the nicest!

Also, no bush around it. I like your style. Very modern man. Not sure I could pull that off myself.

I’m genuinely glad you got to this before me, I’d hadn’t thought of the bushes angle. Next level, Gaborio. Next level.

    Re: Finally built a deck!

I'm assuming you did it all yourself. That said obviously excluding labor what was your cost broken down, lumber and decking? Not including gravel or tubes/ concrete.

My deck needs a redo. It's 10x10 did it about 13 years ago. Now looking at this I might have breakout my tools.

    BTW looks excellent!

The Trex is about $2.50 per foot. I used Trex select.

This deck is 16íx20í and the total was $3200 for lumber and decking. The Trex was $1800, and another $200 for the screws.

I used a local lumber yard, not a box store. They stock various lengths and colors, I was happy to find out I could buy 20í lengths , so no seams in the decking.

Is it me, or are building materials just over the top expensive?

Interesting that you build your decks "free standing". I've never heard of that before.

    Re: Finally built a deck!

Thatís what I figured but still surprised.
I did mine 12 years ago and it was 1K for everything. I also used Trex or something similar that my local lumber store sold. The boards expand over time and now have some bows on some seams. My fault should have spaced them apart more.
Iím guessing same deck supplies today for mine will be double the price.

Yes supplies have gone way up in price. Building across the US is at a torrid pace. Supply and demand Economy 101!

If you attach it to the house, itís a moisture trap. Iíve seen so many ways that people try and to keep things dry, but in most cases, fails in the long run. Iíve even seen decks fall off the house because the lag bolts fasting it to the house, look to have condensated over and over and rotted the wood box on the house.

Free standing is a bit more work, as youíre adding another row of support footings close to the house.

    Re: Finally built a deck!

Looks really great. My back deck I did 12" on center with the plans of going Trex in the future. At the time I did the front porch with Trex and it faded so bad I didn't want to go that route again until they did better with the fading issue. I hear the new stuff is great. Yours looks awesome, nice color choices.

    Re: Finally built a deck!

my deck on my house is free standing as well,, the one on my barn is not, but it's a second floor deck, carpenters that built is flashed the board attaching with copper

I agree with R7, attaching the deck will eventually compromise something
