I need a fun summer car

I'm on the verge of unloading my two Mk4 Golf TDIs; I've got a decent daily Mk6 TDI so I'm looking at getting something fun for the summer. Figured best time to buy would be around now before people have to store vehicles.

I've had automotive ADD thinking about this. I'm looking for $5-6,000 or less.

Anything from late C4 Corvette (LT1), Maserati Biturbo, Jag XJS or XK8 (coupe), Mercedes SL R129 to Mk2 Supra P Type, Mitsubishi Starion/Chrysler Conquest, AWD Eclipse/Talon, first gen MR2.

    Thoughts? Suggestions? Insults?

I had a 2002 Toyota MR2 Spyder for a few summers. Great lightweight car for summer fun! Not a chick magnet but really happy guys would start up conversation just about everywhere I went with it..... Hmmmm. Lol

Beat me to it. Miata Is Always The Answer

I have 5 Miatas. Love them.

I'd say get an S2000 as even better but not withing the budget.

They are cheap enough that if you have room you never have to sell it and still have a more reasonable car around if needed.

You can even find already turbo/supercharged ones if you want more pep within that budget.

They always make a top 50 greatest cars of all time of sorts for a reason... C4's don't neither do the Jags.

Alternatively an Mr2 but they are cooler but less "fun". (snap oversteer, had those too) (2nd gen recommended)

Had a lot of cars in my life and its hard to beat a Miata for the buck. E30's are going crazy in price and aren't the same.

Had an E30 and a Miata years ago. Not exactly rushing to get back into either.

Keep an eye out and they come up

Hard for any NA to be worth more than $5k. Usually the only ones that do are turbo somewhat clean ones

Then you're left with insults. You're all over the place with your selection and you're "not looking to get back into" some of the best cars that fit the description and budget.

You seem like somebody who wants a quirky coupe that few others have by now (90's) with some power or potential power behind it for $6k, reliability not being a concern.

    You list American/British/Japanese/German models

    I4, I6, V8, V12 some NA some FI.

    Convertible, TTop, Hardtop

Pretty much any 90's coupe fits your criteria.

E30 with a motor swap. I have one that will run with a newer M3 until 140, where it runs out of gear.

All the power without the weight.

Or find a 300GT that blew out second gear for short money. All the quirky issues you seem to want on one of those.

While not quite as easy to find in that price range, I'd add 350Z convertible. Even if you can find one, older 300Z 'vert. Guy down the street just sold a 300 earlier this summer, really nice condition for 6k.

I'd only want a VR4. And nice ones are starting to get up there in price

A 350Z coupe was be nice. Great exhaust tone. I've seen then sub $6,000
An NA 300Zx is a bit of a dog imo. And twin turbos aren't common in my price range

I had a similar car hunt several years ago (although convertible focused) and ended up with a V8 Mustang. It was inexpensive and has been reliable and fun for me since. I have a thread on here about it.

If anyone come across a nice Miata or a nicely tuned (not insane) Subaru on the low end (aka a deal) feel free to pass it my way.

I liked my E21 much better than the E30 I had

I think you could find a bug eyed Sprite as a project car for that money

Ok let me clarify, I'd never buy a $5000-6000 or less VW. Especially a Mk5 R32, you're asking for trouble at that price.
