I need a fun summer car

Re: I need a fun summer car

Let's start with the obvious vagueness.

    How do you define fun?

Straight line acceleration? Great handling? Convertible for cruising in the backroads? Reliable (broken cars aren't fun). Do looks matter? (if yes, that's also not covered by "fun")

Your old blog shows you know your way around cars and are no stranger to oddball vehicles. You said you already owned two of the (arguably) best suggestions that fit your basic criteria. I doubt anybody can bring up a suggestion you haven't heard of or unfamiliar with.

Your own current lead vehicle is an Automatic VW (less "fun" than a manual even if DSG) with 200K miles.

Others can't help you if you don't know what you want.

Fiero GT, only choice better than that is a BMW 840i if you can find one for the price.

Pffft. 850 with the 6 speed. Unicorns, but V12 and technological quirks galore.

You'll spend.more time with a wrench and a multi-meter in your hand, but damn those things sure are sexy.

Its been a while since I looked, but a road worthy R32 for under 6k seems unbelievable

$6,000 only buys a car with several asterisks.

$6,000 can buy some unreservedly excellent motorcycles.

I know I'm going to get yelled at for not adhering to your $6k price cap, but it's hard to beat this bad mofo right here for $7,500:
    2001 Camaro SS
I had an '02 Z28 and it was seriously an awful lot of fun. T-tops are great for the summer. T56 6 speed is an awesome transmission. Leave some deep smokey burnouts or get 25 mpg cruising on the highway. Honestly, if I had $5-6k to burn on a summer whip, I'd be embarrassed for not ponying up another $1,500 for this jewel. Under 60k miles, one owner!

Oooooooh! I second that! My brother had the same car but a 98 back in 2001 with all SLP mods. It sounded unreal. No faster now than a newer V6 accord, but sooo American, fun the break the rears loose, and t-tips!!

How about a 1993 or older Volvo 240 turbo station wagon with a stick?
    Saab 900 convertible?
    Suzuki x90?
Bmw m coupe? (Probably not 6k)
    Chrysler crossfire?
    Honda del sol?

    VR-4 because I'm biased

Still pretty heartbroken I had to sell my Stealth TT, but it was the "responsible dad choice". Soon as we have a bigger garage space it's the first thing I'm shopping for.

There are deals out there. I let mine go with 115k for $3,000. Took some work but even then almost doubled my money on it. And if you start wrenching now you might get 1-2 days of actual driving in between repairs next year

Sure, in 1993. A couple decades ago. Today the only people driving turbo stickshift 240 wagons are enthusiasts and/or people looking for a low cost car with the sole criteria of 'running' who stumbled upon it in an estate sale.

Have you ever driven a VR6 I had a 98 GTI VR6. Granted it was far from 5K . I paid 850.00 for her and put time and money into it. It was a blast to drive. When I put it up for sale I was overwhelmed with how many people wanted it. I sold it for a profit but barely. If I was better prepared and informed with that car prior to putting so much into it I would have walked away with a few grand.

Make sure you get a car with AC that works.

My VR6 had it but it didn't work. I thought no big deal , windows down sunroof open cool breeze, Righteous!
WRONG!! That car blew heat always. It was an inferno. Nothing was fun in humid hot HEAT!

Six speed 2007 Stillen Nissan Versa 1.8S, red with the Stillen graphics and wheels. There’s a turbo available... but it doesn’t make it faster?
