Re: I need a fun summer car

I feel like one of these is supposed to be a joke, but I'm not sure that was your intention. Solid inexpensive reliable option. The summer fun car though? Nah, more like winter commuter car for when the summer fun car gets put away. Actually, the 240 turbo wagon would fit that perfectly too. Wait...has anyone told op about snow tires yet? Because I'm pretty sure I can take us there.

Unless you have kids, why add extra wheels to the good weather vehicle when you already own a bike?

When I put it up for sale I was overwhelmed with how many people wanted it. I sold it for a profit but barely. If I was better prepared and informed with that car prior to putting so much into it I would have walked away with a few grand.

Make sure you get a car with AC that works.

My VR6 had it but it didn't work. I thought no big deal , windows down sunroof open cool breeze, Righteous!
WRONG!! That car blew heat always. It was an inferno. Nothing was fun in humid hot HEAT!
Yes, driven pretty much everything in the Mk4 range, including the VR6 and the R32. Don't get me wrong, they are definitely fun cars and arguably the best looking VW Golf generation, but only when they're running well, which is not often. The Mk4 generation (as well as early Mk5's) had horrendous long term reliability, which is why I'd never recommend anyone buy one these days unless they love wrenching. Of course there are exceptions, but that gen is well known for nickel and diming people to an early grave.

FWIW my wife just got rid of her Mk4 Jetta with 150k miles, which was no exception. Countless small problems, constantly.

Normally I would agree with you but I work at a VW specialty parts place so I don't think ownership would ultimately be too bad

Your old blog shows you know your way around cars and are no stranger to oddball vehicles. You said you already owned two of the (arguably) best suggestions that fit your basic criteria. I doubt anybody can bring up a suggestion you haven't heard of or unfamiliar with.

Your own current lead vehicle is an Automatic VW (less "fun" than a manual even if DSG) with 200K miles.

Others can't help you if you don't know what you want.
The MK5 R was just a suggestion. I would not pay anywhere near retail for one hence the one on Copart but a few friends told me Copart sucks and doesn't have any deals
The DSG trans are a problem as the R32 was the first version of it if I recall. A Euro 6 speed swap isn't uncommon or difficult.

I'm not really a convertible fan if I'm honest.
A Biturbo would be a fun experiment. It will obviously never be reliable or fast. But interesting nonetheless.

Updating the blog has been on my to-do list for 5 months

I did see that Vette. Not a fan of drop tops. Although the hardtop is nice and rare.

I don't wanna burn to death at the hands of 30 year old Pontiac

G35 coupes are nice but that's a car I couldn't deal with an automatic in.

E46 Non Ms feel cheap to me. Sorry I'm nitpicking

E31s are gorgeous but parts are $$$$$ and hard to find. The V12 is basically two M20 I6s welded together at the crank. Dual DMEs, dual distributors.

But I don't think a V12 or V8 could be found in my price range.

    Volvo turba would be cool.

Chrysler Crossfire is just a shittier Benz SLK.

Del Sol always seemed like it should have been mid engine.

Still pretty heartbroken I had to sell my Stealth TT, but it was the "responsible dad choice". Soon as we have a bigger garage space it's the first thing I'm shopping for.

There are deals out there. I let mine go with 115k for $3,000. Took some work but even then almost doubled my money on it. And if you start wrenching now you might get 1-2 days of actual driving in between repairs next year
They are neat. I dig the 90s Japanese plastic interior and gadgetry. They are slowing climbing in value though.

    350Z has potential. Local too.

Talon has been up for some time. Seems like a lot of work went into it but it still needs more. I just saw this one posted on the Book

    The Civic?

Pre 91 C4 Corvettes are loaded with 130hp and more rattles than a baby's crib.

MK1 Audi TT are nice if theyre a 225hp version. Always liked the looks. But they're just a VW MK4 platform and I'm trying to try something new.

Just sold my 98 TJ a few months ago. Owned it for 5 years and I never took the roof off

The turbo bricks were actually pretty sweet cars for what they were back in the day.

Never taking the roof of a Jeep is pure travesty

I was the only bidder but there's a reserve. Seller has one business day to either accept or reject the bid.

Re: I need a fun summer car

backstory: wife wanted a new car. I basically said anything but a VW, they have electrical problems.

Of course she found a nice 02 2 door golf gti 1.8T. Nice car, had neuspeed springs, and stock strust which I replaced with bilstein struts for her.

then the brake lights came on and stayed on, then the moonroof opened on its own, then the wipers came on on their own, then the traction control light, then the check engine light......
