Yes they are still available. Identified by 6 radial lines on top of the head.

If you really need that strength and can't find them you may have to go to an A490 bolt.

it's a bolt that attached the hydraulic piston to the boom on my little toe hoe

snapped in half yesterday, replaced it with a grade 5 just to get my toe hoe mobile again, but suspect that might not last long , the broken one is a grade 8, 3/4"x 8" 10 threads/inch

    Re: grade 8 bolts

Grade 8 is a SAE specification (SAE J429) where ASTM is a separate entity. ASTM F3125 rolled 6 older ASTM specs into a single document and the older spec numbers are now the "grade" of the bolt. Grade A490 is part of the F3125 spec and as previously mentioned, are comparable to grade 8 bolts in both chemistry and performance.

Being designed for structural use, A490 bolts tend to be larger in diameter and shorter in length for joining beams together so you may not find the size and length combination you are looking for. ASTM A354 grade BD has the same strength as A490 but the spec allows for many more sizes and head types.

Fastenal only carries grade A490 in 3/4"-10 in lengths up to 7" and they don't stock grade 8 bolts in the size you need.

McMaster has grade 8 bolts in your size in both zinc yellow-chromate (McMaster-Carr) and zinc-aluminum finishes (McMaster-Carr).

got it ordered from McMaster-Carr, for some reason I never think of them, Graingers has always been my go to, and when I went to their website, I had a hard time navigating thru the different types of bolts

my local hardware store had em up to 6" length, no 8"ers

You could say that. I very recently had to deal with this topic for work so the question was well timed. I now know way more about bolts than I ever cared to!

Grainger's website is so bad that I won't use them anymore. McMaster's so good I go there for almost everything first.

Recently they have become very competitive for a lot of things. Especially things you need quick.

Grainger's hard copy catalogue is what I'm used to, and of course, driving to the warehouse in Manchester, and picking it up today

I was in the Army when companies injected counterfeit Grade 8 bolts into the supply chain. Armored vehicles were popping them left and right.

Michael Crichton's very good (fiction) book Airframe was about counterfeit parts in airliners. Well worth a read.

In terms of defense industries, or anywhere that the government is involved as a buyer/purchaser/user, an entire subset of law is actually setup to handle defective products being sold (to the government) as the real deal. They are called Qui tam cases and fall under the False Claims Act. The False Claims Act was passed under Lincoln during the Civil War, where dodgy merchants would sell things to the Army like sick horses, defective firearms, substandard uniforms etc.

There are some really interesting books about this, because it's one of the few ways a whistleblower can profit from bringing a fraud to the government's attention. Giantkillers by Harry Scammell is a good read if you're interested.

Harry Markopolous, the Massachusetts son who famously identified Bernie Madoff as a fraud years before Markoff went belly-up, does a lot of False Claims Act stuff.

Same in Vt. I order from McMaster twice a week for smaller quantities. Larger orders go to Main Source if time allows.

How much is shipping on small orders? Whenever I've looked at ordering from McMaster they're always "Don't worry, it's cheap, we'll bill you later"...
