    granite counter tops

Anybody else make your own? Just finished the 4th and final counter top for my kitchen today. It's very time consuming and messy, but very easy. It's also ridiculously cheap. I bought two 6'x10' polished slabs for <$650 delivered. This Makita PW5001C 4'' Electronic Wet Stone Polisher grinder is wonderful.

At the box store I picked up this stuff called Granite Gold. It's safe for natural stone and puts a nice shine on your countertops. Great for cleaning up after dinner and much safer than harsh kitchen cleaners most people have under their sink.

Yup. I use granite gold on my marble. Works great on stone. I use the cleaner and then use the sealer every couple months as well. I got it from Lowe's.

How did you get the straight cut to join two together?

I've never had to join two horizontal surfaces. All the tops I've ever made could be done as one piece and were separated by cabinets or appliances. One of the reasons I made the cabinets in the picture below the way they are was specifically to avoid a long run of counter top. The other reason is because I think it looks more interesting than a wall of same-depth/same-height cabinets.

I use a long piece of OSB as a cutting guide when I make any cuts though. The cuts are pretty straight. The saw I use is a standard Porter cable 7 1/4" circular saw with a kit like this added: 4201 007 1014 Aftermarket Stihl Water Attachment Kit

Did you do any radius cuts for sink corners or edges?

Yes. To do so, I make templates out of 1/2" OSB and used a 2" diameter diamond drum "sander" with a guide bearing on top. The drum fits in my variable speed Milwaukee 13 amp grinder with a custom base plate I made. The guide bearing follows the template and make the corners (or any other shape with an inside radius of 2" or less) perfect. The only downside is that I have to run it dry, but the variable speed and high current of the grinder means I can run it slowly and still have plenty of power to grind with ease. The diamond drum does not seem be affected much running dry. I use 4" flexible diamond sanding discs on a 3" rubber backing plate to smooth and polish the corners.

60 sq ft you saved yourself roughly $3000 to had someone else do it and you got the proudness of doing it yourself.
    That's pretty solid.

I'd really like to find out more about the how to and the tools needed. I would love to do this my self. I have a right angle counter about 6 by 4, with a sink hole and another 2 foot piece. Should be pretty easy, with the right tools and knowledge.

Also pretty interested in the details, I'm intrigued. There's a good chance I'm about to end up with another house to overhaul soon.

It kinda makes me cringe a little when people talk about sanding/cutting stone or concrete dry. All contain high levels of silica, which does the exact same thing as asbestos in your lungs.

    Looks great by the way.

    Re: granite counter tops

i just bought my first house in March of 2017 and have since redone the entire kitchen. I was going to go with Granite but a guy i work with convinced me to look into Soapstone. I recently bought two slabs measuring 6'x10'. Was about $1500 delivered. I bought a smooth carbide tile saw and made all countertops in one weekend. Saved myself about $4000 in having a company come in and do it for me.

Soapstone cuts easily compared to granite. The nice thing about soapstone for a countertop it isn't porous. They probably look awesome.

Wish I could point you to a book, a video, or something, but I'm self taught. I can show you if you want to come over and see for yourself how to do it.

Thanks, I wear a mask when doing dry work.
