Guys who have done home improvements, please help me price this job

    Hey guys,

I need to have two small jobs done that I am trying to get a handyman from angie's list to do for me. I have received a quote but don't know heads or tails about this so don't know if its in the right ballpark. Could use some opinions from folks that are experienced.

Job # 1: I was quoted $1233 for labor and materials for this.
    • Replace kitchen counter top with a new "formica" top, supply new material and dispose old material.
    • Rip out one of the cabinets underneath the counter top to make room for a dishwasher (kitchen currently has no dishwasher)
    • Install new dishwasher (customer provided) - with new plumbing, electric, garbage disposal line, etc.
    • Reuse existing sinc.

Job # 2: I was quoted $300 for this one for labor and materials.
    • This wall in a stairwell used to have carpet on it (no idea why). I ripped out the carpet and want it to be a wall that can be painted over. Carpet on stairs is being replaced.
    • Sheetrock and joint compound for edges, no plaster (supposedly too small a job for a plasterer).

Photos of both below. I'm not looking to get the best price, time is of the essence as there is flooring and painting being done by two separate crews as we speak and I need these two fixes done for those guys to then do their thing. I just want to know if I am being taken.

    Thanks a lot NESR,

Yea I'm no career expert but in my experience those seem like totally reasonable quotes based on the description of the job.

$1200? You can actually get a guy to show up and step through the door for under $2k, jump on it.

The second job, Make sure he is going to sheetrock all the open, and I'd try to either get the wainscoat removed and sheetrocked or at least sheetrock the open wood area. $300 to screw with drywall, bargain.

my thinking as well, $1200 price sounds low, read the fine print in his proposal to make sure you don't get hit up for "extras"

The sheetrock is a killer deal. I skim coated mine and I don't think I'll ever do that again.

Those sound insnanely low. Material too inculded? Idk
I believe the kitchen is $5000+ if you do nothing at all yourself and they do all the work.
Oh they are NOT installing new cabinets?

I highly recommend taking construction advice from Savas. To illustrate his builder's acumen; when Savas had a leak in his shower, he opted to use god knows how many tubes of silicone caulk to "seal" *all* of the grout lines in the tub surround. His methods might be unorthodox, but you can't argue with the results.

Formica is just a laminate top. This guy just might need the work, and it is the Holidays. You could easily do the kitchen work he describes in a day if you have any experience with countertops. I would guess he is going to run into a bit of some snafus getting that cabinet out, they never just come out. But for someone wanting the work and has little to no overhead, good prices.

Lmao. I'm by no means a construction expert. Not even a handy man. Never claimed to be. But I did get a few quotes for getting my bathroom and kitchen redone.

Floating floor? I am having very similar floating floors put in both first floor and second floor kitchens. Grey is now trending I am told.

I am also having the painter strip the wallpaper in the 2nd floor and paint.

Watch youtube videos on dry wall and mudding. Then do that. Great thing about joint compound is if you fuck up you just have hours of sanding to fix it.

also using a leaf blower to get sanding dust off the ceiling (after scrapping off popcorn) prior to painting is a terrible idea... ask me how I know.

I know I'm not handy. that's why I typically don't bother. I've got zero desire or satistfasaction trying to learn something, and then fuck it up, and then spend more money to fix what I fucked up.

Perfectly fine spending the money once to have it done right.

I've learned long ago there are several things you don't do in home improvement. Expecting the sewer line to be empty and starting a leaf blower in the house.
